I just found out my husband is relocating us from Las Vegas to Charlotte. We've been to Charlotte and love uptown. Are there any young families that live in uptown? What about the elementary schools there? Thanks for any input!
I am not sure why a person would move to Charlotte with children and live uptown. Suburbs, including street car suburbs like Dilworth, are what makes Charlotte attractive to families.
What I'm looking for is living close to things within walking distance that are not really high priced. I liked uptown (probably 1st ward) because it had an old walgreens (I think it was that). I know lot's of the artsy areas in other cities have the higher priced shops / restraunts, is that true in Dilworth?
There is no Walgreens in 1st ward (perhaps you are thinking of the CVS in the 4th Ward at 6th and Graham) and what do you mean by not really "high priced." It would be tough to consider living in anything less than a 3BR condo with two kids and you're probably looking at a minimum of $200/SF+ for older condo's in 3rd Ward to $300/SF+ for better located newer condo's.
Many of the newer condo's in 1st ward are smaller 2BR's many starting at around 700SF (small for a family). It would be difficult to consider a house for less than $500K (in 1st Ward) but some TH's can probably be bought for somewhere in the 200's+ in 1st ward (M Street). You can probably find a fixer upper in the 3rd ward for around $250K - $350K but its likely crap at that price. Anything detached in the 4th ward is probably closer to or above $1MM...but unless you are in the 4th Ward walking distance remains a challenge.
In Dilworth, a decent house will cost more than $600K and you wont be able to walk to much unless you are close to South or East Blvd's.
Depending on what you define as "high priced" NoDA or Plaza Midwood are probably better options for you but the schools are questionable. It really depends on what you are looking for.
I'd find a good real estate agent and better define your parameters. There are some families with young children, primarily in 1st and 4th Wards. My wife and son and I live just outside uptown right now but would have no problem living inside 277.
I live in 4th Ward which is UPTOWN. I see families all the time...mothers pushing strollers...etc.
It is a GREAT place to live. There might not be a Walgreens but there is an Eckerds & a CVS. I can walk to the pharmacy, grocery stores, restaurants, sporting events, cultural events, the Main Library, an indoor water park (Ray's Splash Planet...great for kids), an upscale movie theater, upscale bowling and the list goes on and on...something you can not do from the suburbs.

Not aware of a Walgreens.
1st Ward is personally my least favorite Ward...there are some issues over there. Some of those apartments are Section 8...which might look nice on the outside...but doesn't attract the nicest crowd. There was also a gang shooting over there a year or 2 ago. Not being biased...but 4th Ward is the nicest of the Wards.
Anything with a ZIP code of 28202 is Uptown.
