My wife and I are planning on moving to Charlotte. We would both be working in Uptown. What are close, but safe and affordable areas to look at. Also, what is an average, if any, commute time for the area. Thanks for your help!

There are lots of good areas with an easy commute to uptown. Are you looking for apartments, condo/townhomes, or single-family homes? Are schools important?

Schools are important and we are looking for a single-family home.

Consider Dilworth, an old money community just minutes down South Boulevard from Uptown.

Look at anywhere in South Charlotte. Keep away from East or West, as schools largely stink. If you are willing to go a little further than South Charlotte, head into Union County. Cabarrus county can be interesting for some.

Lots of people like the north area, but 485 is still years away from being completed up there, so commuting can be rough.

What do you consider affordable? I can help you as our situations are similar.

there are no indian "shops" in Uptown. However, there is a small community of indians and related stores on South Boulevard as you head away from the Carolina Park Mall. There's a few Indian sari shops, food stores, etc. The Indian community in Charlotte is quite small....it is much, much larger in Raleigh because there are many more tech/bio-tech companies there.

What's up with the 485? Is there a site online I can go to see the neighborhoods it will be going through and a schedule? I'm concentrating my home searches mostly in the areas north of Charlotte, but don't want to wind up right next door to a freeway. Scary stuff!
