Finally! DH is at the point where we need to get started on the job hunt. Neither of us have had to do it for a while so I am wondering, do you still send out resumes and cover letters or do folks now just email everything. Should we look for a headhunter or brave it on our own first? He is in the IT field (programmer). Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I would go with a headhunter and while you're working with him/her you can still send out resumes on your own. Most people e-mail them. You can look at sites like monster.com, but a headhunter is more experienced.

Thanks for such a quickly response. One of the other questions I had that I didn't put was, is it appropriate and how do we get potential employers to know that we are not necessarily looking for help with relocation costs. It seems like that is somewhat of a deterrent for some employers and we aren't looking for that kind of help. We would willingly except it but aren't counting on it. We just want them to know that is not what we are looking for. I guess that is another thing a headhunter would handle?*(#?

I would use a headhunter for IT, you can tell them you are not looking for relocation costs.

I wouldn't forfeit the relocation assistance right off the bat, just let your headhunter know that it's not a deal breaker. Keep your options open. I wouldn't mention relocation at all in resumes you send out on your own. Let the employer bring up the subject.

That is what I was hoping to hear about. We would definitely welcome the assistance but it is not a deal breaker. We are just hoping not too many employers assume you will be looking for relo help. You guys are such a great help. Thanks.

Smile I agree with all the responders - great answers

FWIW- If relocation expenses are an issue for a company, prospective employers will mention in their ad as such. Good luck.

DH got a headhunter. Relocation was not a factor for us, but his firm did offer a sign-on bonus instead of a relocation package. I think many companies are moving to this.

It didn't cover the entire expense, but it did cover most of it.
