If it was the right time for you....
To pick a puppy. You want a puppy that won't grow much over 30 lbs as an adult (a little room to play 5-10lbs) where would you go to look and what breed would you look for?....In Charlotte... No miniature breeds..no offense..

I would go to a shelter or a rescue group.
Depending upon my lifestyle (do I have kids? a house or apt? fenced in yard? what is my tolerance for hyperactivity? or, do I want a couch potato?) would guide my research of breeds to determine what characteristics would fit me & my family the best.
I can attest from personal experience that a rescued dog is a grateful dog and easier to train and work with.

I'm fully open and what I want to hear is your personal taste.
For example I'm lazy and 1 walk a day and like a lap dog so I got....
I like a mean (not a fighter but protector) dog that's around 150 lbs so I picked.....
I like a dog that just loves everyone so I picked and put him through......
See I'm open to my ways (not set in place) so different dogs that work out in different situations I can adjust to. I will say I'm in an apartment but I can give full atetion and have no problems training dogs.

OHMYGOSH, IF I could have a dog there is one that I am in love with - the Westie! Someone I met had one and after spending just a few hours around it I was ready to be a dog owner! They are adorable and very easily trained. Not sure where you'd get one around here (the girl I met had gone up to southern Virginia) but I'd sure check them out.

My parents have one so strange....
My mom swore she would take in no more dogs but low and behold she was riding down the road one night after church and this little dog was running along the street. She gave all efforts to find the owner to no success and finally took her in completely sweet dog I must say.

A fun, lovable, easy to train bichon. We have one who is 9 years old and still acts like a puppy. We don't do the boofy bichon cut or anything. He really is a good dog.

Well, I have two rescues; one is a very hyper lab mix who weighs 70+ pounds. She is loving, sweet, both terrified of everything and aggressively "attacks" barking loudly at anything that moves. She has a bit of anxiety about being left places (she was left behind by her previous owners when they moved) but not destructive.
My other one is a sweet, gentle husky/shepherd mix. She weighs about 50 pounds. She is my second dog of this mixed breed. She is loyal, quiet, loving and just the best dog. My other dog was the same way. I would heartily recommend this type of mixed breed. Not only are they sweetheart dogs, but, sometimes (not my current Ashley) look really fierce and can be a great deterrent if you need protection.
Now, for a complete and total couch potato, you could adopt a Greyhound. They are also very sweet and loving and just need someone to love them after their hard lives of racing. I don't think that they weigh more than 40 pounds, they are tall, but, skinny. I also know a lady that is very active with the local Greyhound rescue group and she could direct you better.
Again, whatever breed you consider....there most likely is a rescue group that has puppies or adolescent dogs that desperately need a home.
Another consideration might be to foster a dog that is a part of one of the rescue organizations. That way, you are not committed to that dog, you are just caring for it until they can find a home for it. (or you decide that it is a part of YOUR family ) That gives you a bit of flexibility in your decision.
Try petfinder.com. There are a lot of dogs available on there.
