What are the best suburbs of Charlotte for raising kids, and close to the city?
Considering a move to NC, concerned with low crime rate, some sort of historical background to the town and its architecture (would like to be able to chose between new construction and historical homes), and of course education and reasonable proximity with reasonable traffic. Does this exist around the Charlotte, NC area?
Thx.

I believe it does, of course, a lot will depend on what you would like to spend. Some areas closer to town are pricier than those further out.

Check out Gastonia, they have a nice historic area in town, plus a mix of new development. Just a suggestion to start with.

Is there a zip code for that area? I couldn't find it as a municipality proper when searching on realtor.com.
Thanks.

Not really, there are some pockets left but not in the Charlotte area. Charlotte has pretty much scurbbed most of the old off for just the new. You might consider the Raleigh area for a good mix of old and new.

How did they accomplish this, by tearing down all the old stuff? Maybe it wasn't in such great condition then to begin with? I don't really know which is why I'm asking. Unfortunately the jobs I want are all in Charlotte.

Charlotte is a NEW city. They keep that by tearing down anything that is older than 15 years old (well, not everything, but, most things) and building new ones. There is little cool architecture here; the only "old" stuff is maybe some Victorian-age houses all concentrated in a small town's downtown (Concord, Kannapolis, Statesville) that are only for sale to someone who wants to restore them. Most, if not all public buildings are new (within the last 50 years). It's really quite sad considering the history of the area.
