I know there is some good Barbecue around Mooresville like
Sonny BBQ
but for lower Lake Norman I prefer Lake Shore Barbecue in Denver
Denver Dining: Lake Shore Barbecue - The Shelby Star
many restaurants serve eastern style which is too much vinegar and not enough flavor and is cook over gas or electric but good barbecue is cook over hickory wood and not many restaurants do that in this area. They might as well serve it via microwave ... blah

Vinegar is the BOMB but it should be added by the person eating the BBQ, not the cook. I make mine that way. The stuff I can't get used to is the red stuff they use near Shelby, like at Bridge's. The Q is good but red slaw? Strange.

red slaw is common around here least north of the city The only difference between red slaw and cole slaw one uses ketchup and the other uses mayonnaise. It an acquire taste I like it best on hot dogs but will not eat it alone but I will cole slaw most restaurants will have both to offer

A pretty interesting que restaurant in Mooresville is Lancasters. There is a satellite location near the big strip mall, but the mother ship is within downtown Mooresville. They have a lot, and I mean a lot of NASCAR stuff on walls, ceilings, etc. You need to go just to see it. Forget about being a NASCAR fan, this is a must do bbq place. I think they opened one in Huntersville too, but it is the one in Mooresville, with the NASCAR stuff you need to go to.
I think the best one anywher near lake Norman, is Gary's in China Grove, about 30 minutes. It is on "old 29" near the exit for China Grove off of 85. Gary's is another must do. The also have fountain Cheerwine...as good as it gets.
I grew up in Salisbury and lived in Huntersville, so I know the places. I also like Wink's in Salisbury, but that may be cause I got used to that. Winks also has foot longs, a lost or dying art.

I can't recommend any place in this area, at least not for really good authentic NC BBQ.

I've been her 10.5 years and have yet to find what I consider to be good BBQ. I make my own.

I know that Moes in Cornelius serves huge BBQ sandwiches and other good dishes and that are quite good. But, like many others on the board, I prefer the N.C. brand BBQ with its vinager base. I have heard that Lancasters in Mooresville is pretty good but I haven't tried it yet. Sonny's is an embarassment to any respectable Carolinian that knows BBQ. It should be deported back to Florida. The worse BBQ I have eaten in North Carolina was at Carolina BBQ on Woodlawn Rd. It was so bad I won't even give them a second try.

The best in Lake Norman has got to be MAC'S Speed Shop.
Don't let the name fool you - it's awesome - they have pork bbq, beef brisket bbq and i think ribs....
