Job industries with longevity
Before I slide into my own personal pity party over my husband's job loss today, I thought I would pick the collective C-D brain for some ideas.
In your opinion, what industry(ies) have the potential for the most longevity? I don't mean specific job titles though.
I think of the following industries that provide services that people always need, like:
- health care
- education
- IT (thanks JLK706)
- government (thanks ellemaew)
What else? I'd like to try and give my husband some ideas to jump start his job search. TIA, as always, for your help.

But perhaps companies will maintain in-house IT departments. I can see call center work being outsourced, most definitely.

I honestly don't know of any industry that is recession proof - even health care can be affected by it - as people lose jobs and their benefits, they seek less medical care. I would say that the two least susceptible in my opinion are Government and education. I saw an article this morning that the FBI is on a hiring binge...

Agreed, there are some components that cannot be offshored, but having worked in IT - and in two large banks - you'd be amazed at how much CAN be offshored, and already has been.

That's so sad... but probably true.
I will tell my husband to check out the FBI. There must be a field office in Charlotte somewhere. Thanks!

The market rentals (apartments) are still doing okay for the time being. In fact when home sales started to drop rental rates increased. However it's been really slow the past two months. It might be picking up a little bit since the holidays are over though. That's just my current view of things from uptown area.
