Actually...this got me thinking...outside of NY, LA, Chicago, Seattle, SF, Boston and DC what are some strange cities where sitcoms have been set...I can think of the following without too much deep thought...
WKRP in Cincinnati - ???
Drew Carey - Cleveland
Dallas - ???
Golden Girls - Naples?
Las Vegas - ???
There was a show called Providence once too..which was probably set in Providence
Some of these make perfect sense in the context or concept of the show.
WKRP - Last stop station for a bunch of losers and rejects from the radio industry. What better city to be in than Cincy?
DC - Drew is from Cleveland and he wanted to make fun of the area
Dallas - Set in the oil industry so Texas is a perfect place
Golden Girls - Old people retire to Florida
Las Vegas - Half of the show was spent promoting singers. What better place to have a logical excuse to bring in a singer than Las Vegas? Makes much more sense than the Doobie Brothers showing up on What's Happening.
The Office - Again, a show with losers and rejects. What better place to be than in Scranton.
A better example would be something like Hope & Gloria. Set in Pittsburgh for no particular reason. If you think about it, most shows are set in arbirtary locations. Monk is set in SF and doesn't really need to be. It could just as easily be set in Charlotte or any other city.
There was actually a show on Nickelodeon (I think) about a family in Charlotte about 13 or 14 years ago when I was working in cable in Charlotte. I can't for the life of me remember the name.
There have also been movies shot in Charlotte, like Juwanna Man and Shallow Hal.
The sad thing is . . . I bet other than doing some opening footage, I bet not a bit of footage will be shot here in Charlotte. Too bad.
