A shout out to all newbies from California to NC: Good luck trying to find good mexican restaurants! They seem to be everywhere, but boy are they awful! Even "On The Border" is different than it is back in Cali! I ordered the same thing I always have and was so dissappointed to find out it wasn't made the same here.

As for the fruit...you will see what I mean. The Clementine tangerines are great and that is all I could find so far.

Boy do I miss those things!!!!

Don't go to the chain restaurants. On the Border is definitely not Mexican.
Some of the better places are: El Cancun, Zapata's, Cabo Fish Taco, Senor Tequila or head over to South Boulevard or Central Avenue and look for the small mom and pop places.

I don't have a restaurant to suggest but I do know what you mean by the fruit. I live in NY and bananas and other fruit arrive by boat into Manhatten. It's then trucked all over. Living in the suburbs of the city our fruit is fresh and not too badly priced.

The fruit I have seen in NC looks a few days old and is priced higher.
I'm sure the locals enjoy the fresh local fruit sold on corners and such.I have seen peaches and watermelon sold at the corner in both NC and GA.

There's a place in Monroe called Taqueria La Unica, there used to be one on South Blvd. in Charlotte. Place is awesome!!! Zapatas in Ballantyne and the University area is good also.

Not to offend anyone who made Mexican food suggestions, however, I have to ask what you are comparing it to? I have had several people say places are good and it was only because they didn't know any better. Mind you this has been happening in the Spartanburg/Greenville SC area, but everyone I talk to that has relocated to NC & knows what great Mexican food really is like, says they have tried & tried and never found one. I hope they were wrong!

Flyingscotsman: Ok...that one sounds promising! Thanx!!! I'm out to prove my family wrong, as they all teased me that I would have to go w/out my favorite food by moving.
