Am thinking of driving to Sugar Mtn sometime in the next 2 weeks. Should I buy tire chains? Thinking I don't need to... coz they would clear the roads anyway... Right?

Also, I can drive there in the morn, and be back in Charlotte by night, correct? Cause the hotel rates are exorbitant, and mostly, not available. Besides, I just want to go tubing with my son.. TIA...

You dont need chains and they are kinda more prepared for conditions that way and know they need the ski business so they will make an effort to clear the roads. Put something heavy in your trunk , check your tire pressure and try to wait til after 8 or 9 to avoid fog and give the road crews some time to clear the road. It really a short drive and definite a day trip kind of thing to do . Least that is how I always treated the mountains.
Leave in the morning
enjoy the day
back at night

The road to Sugar €Mountain is narrow and full of hair pin curves which is really fun going around with a activity bus heading the other direction.

A few cinder blocks or large bags of kitty litter in the back work just fine.

You will be fine! You would have to get offroad in heavy snow and into some gravel roads to need chains.

Do be aware - ice can be a problem, tho - especially black ice.
