Ok you guys are the experts! What are the must do for families around here. I know about Carowinds (we have our passes already) We know about things like Monkey Joes, Discovery Place etc... But I am talking those places you go to as a family for an all day/weekend trip. For example, my DH and I love to hike the waterfalls in the mountains in the fall. Kids are too small. But things around the area to go to?

We went to a place last year called Hooker Falls. It was AMAZING. It had several areas to swim and a huge waterfall. My kids thought it was so much fun and it took close to three hours to get there, so it was certainly a day trip.
Also try Cane Creek. It is a bit closer and sometimes very crowded in the main areas, but you can hike off and really be off by yourself. I thought the 'swim' area was a little dirty, but the kids liked the diving board and we sat on the 'beach'. Don't expect anything like the mountains, but to spent the day outdoors with the family for a small expense and a short drive, we liked it.
I went to Kings Mountain National Military Park for a day this week, and wished I had more time to roam around. A movie, a trail, a museum -- tons of interesting history (it was the site of a Revolutionary War battle). And its neighbor is Kings Mountain State Park, so you could even make a camping trip of it if one day wasn't enough or you wanted to do some more outdoorsy things, such as hiking, or visiting their Living History Farm, a "realistic replica of a typical Piedmont farm from the early to mid 1800s". They're in South Carolina, about an hour or so from Charlotte.
check out Bryson City, for the smoky mountain railroad, We did polar Express before Christmas and stayed at the Charleston inn bed and breakfast, great for families
