If you are looking for someone to assist in choosing the right shoe, I'd go to Run for Your Life. They can help make sure the type of shoe is right for how you run. This help in sizing is great if you have had trouble in finding shoes that "feel" right.
For price, wait for a coupon for The Sports Authority or Dick's Sporting Goods if you have already decided on the shoe you want.
The Charlotte Running Company or Try Sports are also excellent at helping you find the right shoe. These are the two places my ds's cross country team have used over the last 2 years.
If you are using the shoes for running, get fitted at one of the major running stores in town: Run For Your Life or Charlotte Running Company.
Once you know what type of show need, get your next pair at www.runningwarehouse.com. WAY cheaper.
DO NOT just randomly buy shoes and then start running. There are basically 3 types of shoes (motion control, support, nuetral) and if you get the wrong type, your knees will yell at your after a few weeks and then you can use your shoes for mowing the lawn.
I used to be a fairly serious runner. Now I am not so serious but try to run 3 or 4 times a week. I bought my last 2 pairs of running shoes (1Nike, 1 Asics) at .......... (drum roll) Kohls... because now I shop price.
"DO NOT just randomly buy shoes and then start running."
absolutely. you must find out what foot type you have, running gait, along with your body weight/height.
advice like, "go buy some Asics Nimbus" is a great way to ruin your legs.
first and foremost, check what kind of arch you have. simply get a brown paper bag, wet your feet, and step on it. from there, you can go on the internet for model photos, it will tell you what kind of arch you have.
after that, consider height/weight, and from there, do some more research to figure out what kind of running gait you most likely have. If you have an old pair of running shoes, even better. You can have them analyzed by someone and they can judge by the wear and tear on the soles of the shoes.
Asics has great shoes to match foot types. I've been running in them for years.
Definitely get yours shoes fitted locally by an actual running store (not Dicks or Sports Authority). They will do the gait analysis, etc on you. You can try on the shoes, get the right size and fit.
Then, go online and shop. Recently, I was quoted over $120 for my Saucony's. Bought online w/ free shipping for $85.
