The great intellectuals who took over the County Commission in Union County last December have long argued that growth doesn't pay for itself. Well...maybe not, but when the economy tanked and growth stopped...all the sudden Union County has no new revenue. Growth does have it's costs, however the revenue from growth typically out paces the cost of the growth. The Union County budget for the last decade proves this beyond a fact....with revenues increasing by tens of millions of dollars. Unfortunately, it did not take the policies of the new board to destroy the county...the economic collapse of the US did the job for them. It would have been far easier to replace the local political hacks.
Now all those new schools are going to be at far less than full capacity and Union County is going to have to pay the bonds that built them. Can't wait to see what the great leaders do next.

CJ - It's much different than our "old NJ stomping grounds", where the solution is just to increase taxes to make up for any shortfall.
Yes, that's why our former state is taxed to the hilt....
I talked to a guy today who works for the county, and he was wondering if he was going to be 1 of the 40 laid off today....he actually has been preparing for this possibility for a long time which I told him was smart of him...
I'm afraid this will be a common theme across Charlotte-Metro...
This is terrible. :-( I so feel for those people that where let go AND for us here in Union County.
