I live in the Concord/Kannapolis area, it has all of those things. Plenty of both new and old homes for reasonable prices, pretty quick drive into the city if you need to commute. However, most suburbs are going to have shops like that. What price range/other features (school districts, etc.) are you looking for?

I will say what everyone will tell you, find a job first before coming here. This is just like any other place that is affected by the economy and having these major banks doesn't mean they are hiring. Once you figure out the job, you can hunt for the house. Best of the luck with the move, I am enjoying it here so far

We are the #2 financial center in America, second only to NY, but I'm sure you've heard about the troubles all banks are having? Wachovia is laying off thousands, though not all in Charlotte now that it has been bought out by Wells Fargo. Just hope you weren't hoping to look for work in one of the banks!

Just about everywhere.

Even Charlotte has failed to escape this.
Drive across America and it nearly is all the same - all the same fast food chains and retailers.
