Monroe is a gem....
This makes me chuckle...because I agree that Monroe is a gem.

I don't think the long-time locals would be the ones labeling Monroe as undesirable. I think it is like you said - folks get all caught up in being in the "best" area or "best school." Who's to say what "best" represents?

Of course, new developments proudly proclaim their new construction as the new "best" place to be. Just because the developers are not yet proclaiming Monroe the "it" place to be, doesn't make it not so.

I think it takes newcomers a while to figure these things out. I see you have. It makes me smile. Enjoy Monroe!

The article stated that the school will use drama, music, dance and possibly orchestra to teach the standard state curriculum.

Darn. I wish they would include non-performing arts like drawing. My oldest son loves art and it has a very calming effect on him. I would love to find a school that focused on art work.

Thanks marvinnative. I love Monroe, but I don't think I want everyone to love it now....If it becomes a "desirable" area.....that only means my property taxes rise.... So, forget about Monroe people....the area stinks, the schools are horrid....Monroe is the last place to consider living in the whole world....

In both instances, I haven't had or known of any issues or concerns with the hispanic people that lived in my area. Can anyone fill me in me on this subject?
Hello Psreaphin
The difference here is that Charlotte has just begun to receive a Hispanic influx of people in the last 10 or 15 years or so. So most people are still uncomfortable with the new arrivals. Whereas in Miami the Cuban population (as well as other Latino folks) have been in the area since the late 1950´s. Over the decades they became part of the political, financial and cultural establishment. It is one of the reasons why they live in higher-end neighborhoods and not the barrio. NYC also has a very diverse latino population ranging from every socio-economic group imaginable. Just as there are illegals immigrants you can also find in Manhattan poshie Latinos such as the
Peruvian socialite and author Alex Kuczynski

Caracas born fashion designer, Carolina Herrera.

And when you look at these two fine ladies they shatter the stereotype of what a hispanic is suppose to be, or to look like. I get the feeling that as more Hispanics from other US cities keep moving to Charlotte they will redefine things here. Just as they have done in other cities.

Default Thanks Ani

I guess we'll just have to wait & see how the Latino population develops in the Charlotte area over time. Hopefully our society can get past stereotyping different cultures over time as well!

Doesn't Monroe already have really high taxes? We looked at a house there on Lake Twitty and loved it but the taxes quoted to us were really high!

These ladies are beautiful. I also believe that people who don't "look like us" and have darker hair and darker skin are just as beautiful.

Monroe's taxes (like Waxhaw's taxes) will seem higher than some of the newer "paper" towns, because they are long, established towns that provide actual services - fire, police, water, sewer, street lights, garbage pick-up, etc. Towns like Marvin or Wesley Chapel or Weddington, etc., are newly formed towns that offer VERY limited services, which accounts for why the tax rate was set so low.

In addition to the above, it all comes down to perspective also. Coming from Jersey, there wasn't a home we looked at in Union County where the taxes seemed "high" to us. And since we purchased out in the county (Monroe address) and don't pay city taxes, we really felt like we had hit the jackpot upon being told what our taxes would be!
