Default Layoff

I like my stats.

How many do you know that have been laid off?

Charlotte or not.

My count is 8, since the new year.

I'll count my blessings. My family is safe (so far) and I haven't heard of any layoffs in our circle of friends.

I know of people in my company in other states who made, uh, "re-employment decisions" by December 31st, but fortunately no one since the beginning of the year. New layoffs are just making things harder for everyone... My sister has been out of work but actively searching for more than a year now. It really stinks.

Sadly, amongst my friends in the western part of this state, I know more than 10 people who have been laid off. Out of that group, two worked for companies that have permanently shut their doors. I would say another three companies are on the brink of shutting down.

As for my extended family, no one yet has lost his/her job, but that is most likely b/c most are business owners, professors/teachers, bio-tech or healthcare. I am concerned about four cousins who are engineers, as their companies have experienced slow downs.

Look a rant right in the middle of your poll!

I can't help but think that a lot of this economic down turn is self fulfilling prophecy. The media blasts this , then we get on this forum and post about who we know that got laid off. Then we put off purchases , sock it away in the savings account, look busy at work and hope its not us next.

I'm not saying everyone should go out and buy a new car right this instant. But, this is a buying opportunity. Our economy is driven by consumers. When we put of purchases we could have made we are not helping ourselves.

Go buy something.

Edit: I'm in sales , but don't sell cars. Just in case you wondered where I'm coming from.

Well, Guy, buying stuff without the means or knowing if you have a job is kind of what got us into this mess....

sorry, as I am sure that you are on commission, but, I, for one, have been on spending lockdown for several months now. I expect that my job will be eliminated by the end of second quarter. (at the latest)

While irresponsible buying is bad during any part of an economic cycle, this is a great buying opportunity across the board. Demand is low which is driving down price. Unlike the very deep recession coming out of the 70s, qualified people can get a great deal of a house, a car, electronics, etc.

Regarding layoffs, hmm, I know at least 6 people who's contracts weren't renewed. I know a few others that were asked that in order to stay they take a pay cut.

In banking/finance/law, I know 8.
Two of those were contractors who simply did not get their contracts renewed.

Otherwise, 5 of my friends are developers (mix of commercial & custom homes) and none plan on working for at least 12-18 months, maybe longer.

My husband is in construction and out of work now. My best friend's husband is a graphic designer who lost his job in the fall.
