I am curious to know where they are getting this data. Also, what would be interesting is to know how much other crime occurs in the area of the Wal Mart. Considering the fact the company specifically targets low income areas for their stores it may not be signficantly higher than the surronding community.

click the second link and it supposely maps out other crime then pin point down to the area close to a store. Im assuming they get their data from crime release from pd departments

After searching a zip code that they did not have any reports for, I found this:

Sorry, we have no data for Wal-Mart stores within 100 miles of 15931. Please write your local police department and request a report.
To have our researchers analyze the data from your nearest Wal-Mart store, forward an official crime report to:

WakeUpWalMart.com
1775 K St NW
Washington, D.C. 20006

I am also wondering if this site is funded in some way by their competitors?

It seems like they use old data. When I put in 28273, I get these results:

Quote:
Since 2002, the Wal-Mart stores below have generated the following police calls in your area.

308 10 Miles 1830 Galleria Blvd Charlotte
210 11 Miles 9820 Callabridge Court Charlotte
886 16 Miles 9101 Albemarle Road Charlotte
656 17 Miles 8709 J W Clay Blvd Charlotte
No mention of the Steele Creek, Tega Cay, Belmont or Wilkinson Blvd stores.

Certainly an interesting report. I still question all of the data they use. It's quite apparent between the name of the website and the general tone of the 29 page report that they could be manipulating the locations to slant the outcomes.

For example, they compare 32 Wal-Marts to 30 Target stores, by utilizing 2 of the Target stores twice, just seems like an odd way to represent data. Additionally, the Wal-Mart stores selected were the 32 'high incident' stores as represented by the descending values. Usually a random selection is more appropriate for trying to establish conclusions. If we picked the 32 worst Targets and did the same comparison, how would the numbers come out? Also if Wal-Marts are open 24 hrs, and Targets are open say 12 or 14 hrs a day, wouldn't you expect more crime at Wal-Mart? And I'm not saying it's going to be a 1 to 1 relationship either, I don't have data, but I'd expect more crime at night than during the day time. The report says there is a 400% higher rate at Wal-Marts compared to Targets.
I'm still reading/skimming thru the report as of this post at least.

Side note - Excel and Word do not play well together, if you're going to make a report and publish it, use Ctrl+Shift and use Copy Picture. Also formatting all excel files to vertically center align the values/text makes things like so much nicer.

Thanks for the detail, Mystery! I didn't delve into all the details of the report that you did but was pretty sure this data was slanted somehow.

Walmarts in the Anchorage, AK area seem to be very safe.
