to build a house? We're building our first home in Woodbury and we were told we should be ready to close by the end of June. I signed at the end of January. Is that the normal time frame or does it normally go longer? We are not building one of the larger 3000+ sf homes, but a moderate 2300 sf. I read somewhere that it was taking Centex in other states almost a year to build. This is our first home so we're rather excited.

6-9 months typical, can be shorter if the builder has everyone lined up.

I'm building with Centex at Fieldstone Farms in Indian Trail. I just signed at the end of January and I was told I should expect to close in June as well.

We have always ended up closing 30-60 days after projected finish dates. I think it depends on the builder though and how much is going on. Weather always seems to play a factor in delaying progress. With not a lot of construction going on you may get lucky and finish early or real close to on time because generally subcontractors do not get paid by their contractor until they finish their part of the construction. I would think in this economy people are going to be anxious to get to work and get it finished so they can get paid. As their building, your site manager or foreman should be able to keep you posted on their track so you can plan accordingly if they do get behind schedule.

Have you picked out your colors yet? It's exciting! Congratulations!

When I was going to build there, they gave me a timeframe of 4-6 months. They were pretty much right on schedule.

We signed on the dotted line February of 2008 and the builder had not done a thing on the lot as of that point. They broke ground around March 1 and all 4 of us in our unit (4 townhouses) closed at the end of July. So about 5 months from breaking ground to completion. And that closing date will be here before you know it. Congrats!

Thanks! It's exciting! Hubby and I are emailing back and forth about what color(s) to paint our daughter's room or any other custom colors in the house. When he came home on leave from Iraq we went to Charlotte and weren't really expecting to start searching for a home right then, but before he went back, it was in the works! So even though I ended up signing the paperwork by myself, at least he'll be home again to close. In a way I'd like to have it all done and finished and presentable for him to just walk in and put his feet up, but at the same time, I know he would love to be able to be there at closing too.

Not to sound insulting, but why on earth would anyone build a new home right now, when there are literally thousands of exisiting homes in inventory, ready to move in?
