Default Books about Charlotte area

Now that we'll be travelling back and forth, scouting out the area, we'll have plenty of time in airports, etc. for reading. What a great chance to learn a little about North Carolina! Any recommendations for a novel, biography, or history on Charlotte (or surrounding areas)? I've read plenty of travel guides, now we'd like to go a little deeper.

If you get a chance to stop in at Park Road Books (an independent bookseller) - or maybe you could even email them - they have a very helpful staff and I always love just walking through the store. There is usually a display of "local" literature in there. I'll keep thinking on a good recommendation:
