I need to know if I was wronged in this situation. Me and a coworker filed a complaint with a supervisor about someone not doing their job. We were told everything would be confidential but through a third party we found out that he went and told them everything we said. I am really angry and this now opens up a can of worms in my opinion.

Are you saying your supervisor told the employee that you specifically complained about him/her?

Did he use your name specifically or did he just say "people around the office have brought to my attention that....."

Did he tell them where he heard it from? I'm not sure how he can remedy the situation without making the other person aware that it exists.
Lets just hope that he did that without giving up his source of information.

Do you have an HR department? You need to go to the HR director immediately, tell him/ her what has happened. You need to cover your hiney. Quickly. And in the future, never lodge a complaint w/ your supervisor - always do it through HR.

Yes he used our names. We were told that things we be discussed through emails without bringing us up. We found out because the person who we complained about told another coworker of ours. She doesn't know that she is on our side when it comes to everything though. We went to someone higher but were told that we needed to go through the supervisor first. We didn't want to because the supervisor a the other person are friends

I believe this is covered by a federal labor law. Check the NC labor dept website as well as the federal labor website.

See we were told we had to go through him first, then store manager, then HR. I'm really angry. I'm only 20 and really need my job.

It doesn't work that way when its the manager you are complaining about. Not when they are basically robbing the company by not doing their job.

Always go through HR. And always do it in writing, so that there can be no question of what you reported and when.

And as someone else said above, I would take this to HR immediately.
