Has North Carolina mandated that little girls get the Gardasil HPV vaccine? It was mandated here in VA but then vetoed. I think girls starting at the age of nine or so are getting it. I think the vaccine is a good thing but I don't think I want my dd to have that right now, and I dont think state should be able to tell us what we should do. This is not mmr or anything. I don't know, just wondering if anyone out there knows...

Unless something has changed in the last few weeks, North Carolina does not require school-aged girls to get the cervical cancer vaccine.

Have not heard of anything being "mandated." Here's a link to a website with info on NC Immunizations required for school.

Default Not currently mandated

The National Conference of State Legislatures has a website where you can track individual campaigns at http://www.ncsl.org/programs/health/HPVvaccine.htm

The most current info on North Carolina follows: A.B. 260 Would require the department of health to distribute information on the HPV and the vaccine through schools to all parents of children in grades five through 12.

No mandate for the HPV vaccine as yet. You must have the 2nd MMR and your DTP / polio updates, Hepatitis B series. Not sure if the measles vaccine is mandatory. Thinking of requiring the meningitis vaccine for college bound students.

No vaccine is mandatory for children/students. All vaccination is voluntary, not compulsory.

It depends on the state you live in. Some states ONLY allow for medical exemptions. The state of NC allows for medical and religious exemptions. Some states also allow for philosophical exemptions, NC is NOT one of them.

No vaccination is mandatory. WV is the only U.S. state to limit exemption to medical. However, this does not mean vaccination in WV is compulsory.

If my post communicated that NC has a philosophical exemption, my sincere apologies. Never thought anything of the sort.

North Carolina Update

The N.C. Senate tentatively approved a bill on March 19th, requiring schools to provide information for parents and guardians on cervical cancer, a virus that causes most cases and the vaccine to protect against the virus. The bill does not discuss whether girls must get the vaccine against human papillomavirus.

Default Not mandated in California...

It's not mandated in California, however, I HAVE been getting my 17-year-old daughter the shots -- she gets her second one Friday! Having been around a lot, and seeing what's happened to other people (men and women) with STDs and AIDS, and Hep B and Hep C, and all, for me, it's a no-brainer.

It felt kind of creepy taking her to the doctor's for it, yet at the same time, I know people who have gotten very ill, became sterile, or died from sexually transmitted diseases, be it Hepatitis, or anything else transmitted that way.

So, I figure I'll take the chance before she's sexually active (thank goodness she is still not active....or as Need_Affordable_Home says: she doesn't "mate!").
