Just an update- got several emails back from commissioners, they seemed suprised and supportive of getting with the super, to try and change it - the more emails, the merrier.
I agree that there's nothing wrong with making the day Mar 9, if it's ok to use it if they missed more days they should use it instead of Memorial Day. I will likely not send my kids on Memorial Day.
I have heard that the schools are not going to "announce" it and are just referring to the calendar because they don't want to deal with the backlash. I've also been told that they can't take them from the remaining teacher workdays because apparently it is in the teachers contract that they have to have a certain number of workdays. I think it stinks to expect kids to go to school on Memorial Day and shows a huge disrespect for those that serve/d our country. They really need to be proactive and build one or two days into the calendar.
I have heard that CMS may take the first day of Spring Break to use for the snow make-up.
I am not sure why they cannot use the MARCH 27th Teacher Workday!!!!
That is so insulting that Union County are going to take away Memorial Day.
I seem to think that years ago CMS tried to do this and i cannot remember if they actually did do it or if outrage stopped it from happening.

I suspect that makeup can't be done or Teacher Workday as the teachers are required to have a certain number WD. Look at the good side, us adults can have the pool to ourselves on MD.....
So tack a day on at the end of the year, or add 10 minutes to the rest of every school day for teachers....there are lots of options to get another WD.
I have not seen any discussion, and certainly I cannot be the only one upset,
that the brain-deads that run Union County Public Schools have rescinded Memorial Day to use as a snow-day make up.
I have just sent off an email to the entire school board commission and the superintendent to see if they can correct this glaring faux-pas on their part.
They could have used President's Day, but they already had school scheduled for that day (another brain dead move) and are skipping right over the Friday before easter, any spring break days, and several teacher workdays...
Was anyone aware of this and just doesn't care?
Good luck in your efforts - what a dumb decision this one was!
I agree that's a crazy day to choose, if another work day was available. In the school's defense, they already used one work day to make up for a snow day and having works days available is very clever/new to me. As a kid up north, I remember the snow days extending the year and after bad winters, the extra days would extend us over an extra weekend, making the last day of school jump from like June 18th to June 24th or something. Not a lot of learning went on during that last week in June!
Thank you for sharing this concern with me. I understand your point of view. Memorial Day is an important holiday. The decision to use this day as a make up day was made over a year ago when the Board of Education adopted the 2008-2009 calendar in December of 2007. The state of North Carolina requires us to operate school for 180 instructional days. The year can begin no sooner than August 25th and must end by June 10th. This calendar (like all others) is the result of the work of a committee made up of teachers, principals, and parents. These decisions are not made lightly. The committee decided to use May 25th rather than the March 9th workday because that was the only teacher workday during the two month span of February and March. The committee recognized that this day was needed for teachers to do grades, catch up, and to give students and staff a break of sorts. I would not support going to school on Saturday. We did that a few years back and it was not productive time. Attendance was dramatically impacted and many families had complications with other commitments.
In closing, I understand your feelings about Memorial Day, but given the parameters in which we have to operate and considering the total picture, I feel we need to stay with the calendar as decided upon by the committee in 2007.
I hope this information is helpful to you!
Sincerely,
Ed Davis
