Post sounds like the deal. You are right next door to Johnson & Wales culinary school! Harris Teeter grocery is not too far away. Try to get a copy of Uptown magazine that will provide you with lots of info.

As for safety, just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. From Post to uptown is a major road, Trade St, I would use that as my main thorouhfare to Uptown. If unsure Trade St has frequent bus service.
