No, you do not NEED a garage. I've lived without a garage most of my life. Once I got one, I've never been without one since. Needing and wanting are two different things.

The garage is the only room in the house that's mine (the wife has taken over the rest) , so yes, I need a garage. Otherwise I'd spend most of my time sitting outside.

We don't have one, and don't need it -- older house in older neighborhood. I like the way neighborhoods look without much better. We do have a carport (looks more like a carporch) that allows covered entry into side door for rainy days. Lawnmower, etc. goes in shed in backyard. It snowed once this winter, not really at all last -- not a big factor.

I could never live w/o one. I don't like to get into my car in the morning for work when it's 20 degrees into a freezing cold car for 4 months. We have lots of frost/ice so there would be scraping involved also. So far it's snowed twice this winter-both several inches.
Plus we have no houses really here w/ basements so where would you keep all your lawn equiptment, tools, garbage can etc.

One thing I noticed, is that these older homes tend not to have enough space on the side, where you could have a garage built towards the back of the property.

Exactly what I was going to say, it's hard enough for us to find somewhere to put our stuff without a basement, we at least need a garage.

Alexia - I think you'd regret not having a garage. They're not just for keeping your car out of the snow. Don't you have "STUFF" you need to store some place, perhaps even holiday decorations, etc.? Seems like it would be better to have a garage when considering resale as well.

I'd hate trying to sell a home without a garage... you've got to think about the next owner's needs too!
