Years ago . . . there used to be regular auctions that went on several times a month - held in old barns or gutted houses. A lot of the stuff was junk, but usually there would be household goods - furniture, old tools, books, kitchenware, etc.

Anyone know if those places still exist? Some of them were really country - as in - old men sitting around outside chewing tobacco, HEE HEE.

But my oh my - I got some great bargains on pottery, garden tools, kitchenware . . .

Check out www.auctionzip.com
Enter your zip code and click the antique/household dropdown, and you will get a good list of options by date.

Thanks, guys! You never know what "gem" you might come across at an auction!

Mom2 - don't forget the estate sales - I have gotten furniture at those, too!

When my college daughter was looking to furnish her first apartment, we visited a lot of consignment shops. One of them recommended auctions to us. We went to an auction in Marshville. As a couple of rookies, we had a great time just people watching. A tip we picked up is that a lot of the storage units have auctions (as in someone never came back for their stuff). If nothing else, it is entertaining.

Storage units - that is a great idea! Years ago, one of my friends went to a storage unit auction and got an entire set of the genuine old white wicker furniture - about five pieces!! It was so beautiful. I had forgotten about those auctions.

Great tip, MN!!!
