Not surprising. A lot of businesses used this tactic in the recession of the 70s. We also cut back on heat in office buildings/churches . . . anything to lower costs. That action directly affects the paychecks of sales personnel, tho . . . so while saving some money for the mall complex itself - and saving on personnel costs at each retail establishment . . . the employees themselves will have less $$ coming in weekly. I guess that is preferable to the alternative - having to close stores b/c the books can't be balanced due to overhead expenses and less consumer activity.
I suspect next step will be no Sat mail delivery to cut costs.
Actually, the have spoken about another no delivery mail day but last I heard it would be Tuesday. But that really doesn't make sense, Sat or Mon makes sense but then it is government.
All of the POs around me have been closing at 5 PM for the past 2 years (which is how long we have lived here). I only know of one PO in the whole East Charlotte area that stays open later...it's open til 5:30 (Mint Hill).
?? So what's new about closing at 5 PM?
Just saw on the news this morning that the top guy at the USPS makes about $800,000!! When you add in bonuses and benefits! Now there's a place to cut back.
Starting Monday, all post offices will close at 5 p.m. Many post offices in Charlotte keep late hours, some open until 10 p.m., and employees and customers alike said the change be a real inconvenience
I didn't know that some stayed open so late.

Earlier this year, the postmaster general talked about the idea of cutting back the number of days for delivery from six to five. But Rice said that is considered a last resort and that move would have to be approved by Congress.
Also, the price of stamps will go up 2 cents, to 44 cents, in May.
I know it's relatively cheap but 44¢?? I wonder if lowering the price would entice more people to purchase stamps, therefore increase revenue.

I heard about this on the radio. Evidently Tuesday is the slowest mail day and the USPS thinks the mail volume would be too great if there isn't weekend service. They may be worried that there will be more of this...
I would rather they cut the hours of the post office windows...you can use that little computer to send anything anytime and also buy stamps...much cheaper than paying for people, I am sure...
I heard this morning that the area post offices will now be closing at 5:00 pm.
This is in order to cut costs.
I also read that Eastridge Mall in Gastonia beginning March 1, will be trimming their hours back.
Sign of the times....
I can accept that much better than them laying off employees. Seems like a tiny sacrifice on our part.
