Default Cool places to eat around Charlotte

My Fiancee and I are looking for some different places to eat. We are getting tired of going to the same places. We live in Shelby which is about 45 mins from the Charlotte area. We was maybe looking for some neat places on the lake, either lake Norman or lake Wylie or anywhere else that has good food.

Have you been to Mac's Speedshop yet? They have really good bbq sandwiches, mac n cheese, hush puppies, ribs. MMMM

It's on South Blvd in Charlotte.

You are in Shelby?

Well there are many places in Gastonia that are really good.

In Lake Wylie, there is T-Bones on the Lake and a little place called Cafe 49.

Our favorite Chinese place is Hsia on New Hope Rd. in Gastonia. And a good sandwich shop is Sub Corral. There is one in Belmont and in Gastonia now.

Well, it certainly is easy to wear out the few decent restaurants in Shelby. At one time, there were a few, Ni Fen, etc. But they, along with 5 East, are gone. Nowadays just about the only places that we go to are Joes Place and the new Pleasant City Wood-fired Grille. Have you tried the new place in Fallston, Sweezy House? Not too bad. I'm not sure if Rose Hill is still open, but that is a place that is sometimes overlooked.

If you are interested in heading the other direction, check out Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria in Spindale. Excellent sandwiches and pizza, great beer, and good music on Friday and Saturday night. Only about 25 minutes away. Big Daddy's in Gaffney SC also isn't too bad.

On Lake Wylie, T-Bones is popular, but there really aren't too many restaurants. On Lake Norman, you can go to Midtown Sundries in Cornelius, and there is also a Vinny's on the lake as well.

Mac's is good. If you are looking for something a bit different, try some of the tapas restaurants in Charlotte. I've been to Arpa's uptown, and enjoyed it.

Shelby?
Since a child I have eaten at Bridges BBQ Lodge on 74 in your town.
It's a destination for us sometimes, one of our top 5 BBQ (pulled pork, not BBQ chicken) spots.

I have to spell out what 'BBQ' is just incase you are not from the South.
My inlaws from MA always think 'BBQ' is griling out hamburgers or maybe BBQ chicken.

T-Bones on Lake Wylie has a good view...and that is it. I would never direct anyone there for good food.

I agree with NascarNancy about Mac's Speed Shop. No view but the bbq is awesome!

For a location that is really unique with good food, I would try Bonterra in Dilworth. It is located in an old church and the food is ver very good (a little expensive for a casual night). Bonterra Dining and Wine Room - Charlotte NC

Another cool location is Bentleys on 27. On the 27th floor in one of the uptown towers. I have only been there for a xmas party so I can't relly comment on the food (open bar killed my taste buds). Cool spot. Welcome to Bentley's on 27 - A Visionary Dining Experience

Midtown Sundries has a location on Lake Norman that's nice. You can see it on the website below. Their food is pretty good.

Midtown Sundries: Lake Norman - Cornelius, NC

Some other places you might consider "different" are below...

Greek Isles in South End: GREEK ISLES restaurant
Get the flaming cheese appeitizer. This place is right beside Jillian's sports bar and Amos' (for concerts).

Roosters beside South Park Mall: Welcome to Roosters Wood-Fired Kitchen

Mez at the EpiCentre (connected to an upscale movie theater): website MEZ

Strike City at the EpiCentre (bowling alley and resturant downtown): Strike City

Maddies Southern Bistro: Maddi's Southern Bistro
This place is located in Birkdale, a nice outdoor shopping area that also has a theater and several stores and other resturants
Birkdale: Live Life at Birkdale Village

Best place on the lake, IMHO, is The North Harbor Club in Davidson:

About NHC

A great restaurant in Mooresville is The Prickly Pear:

The Prickly Pear Restaurant - Modern Mexican Cuisine

I like The Galway Hooker in Cornelius:

And Killington's in Huntersville:

Would second the above. Went there on my wife's birthday. Late summer evening, beautiful setting on the water. Very enjoyable meal and reasonable cost.
Other restaurants in Birkdale Village besides Maddie's;
Red Rocks, Dresslers, Fox & Hound, Positano's. 131 Main on StatesvilleRd between Exit 25 & 28 another excellent restaurant.
