Can you tell us where you live now so we can put this in perspective? The crime statistics I've seen show Charlotte to be slightly better than average when compared to other cities throughout the nation. I've lived in several big U.S. cities, and in each case the local news at night is filled with reports of thefts, carjackings, murders, etc. Unfortunately, that's what happens in large cities, all large cities. There are a handful of places like New Orleans where crime is out of control (for obvious reasons) where there is reason for alarm, but Charlotte? I lived in Charlotte for six years and was never a victim of any crimes, nor to my knowledge were any of my friends. I have family there now and they have never been a victim. I think your fears are way overblown. But again, can you tell us where you live now?

SunnyKayak said "first two areas are close to Huntersville and it relative low crime area."
Palisades has 24 hr. onsite security. Now, having said that, I think it is so odd that all of these folks come on here talking about the horrid crime rate in Charlotte. I have lived here for 18 years (moved here from NYC-where I was mugged in Central Park) and have only had one occasion to interact with our men in Blue. My auto was broken into about 10 years ago & all of my CD's were stolen-that's all. I do not know anyone that has been mugged, raped, assualted or murdered. Yes, I do know one person in Eastover whose home was burglarized about 5 years ago. It was workmen doing the renovation. So is there crime here? Yes, I see it on TV and read about it here, but it does not affect me as I do not live in nor patronize establishments in crime ridden neighborhoods. Additionally, when I am alone at the mall or someplace that may have unsavory characters looking for a quick purse snatching, I just use my NY street smarts, walking confidently with a purpose while being aware of my surroundings. |

I was going to mention that part. There are parts of the uptown area and the immediate surrounding areas that look vastly different than 10 years ago. Lots of the projects were torn down and replaced with new condo type of buildings, that Im sure some are reserved for low income people.

Eh, its about the same if not better than a lot of other large southern cities.
Im from Jackson, MS which wass much smaller than charlotte, but has just as bad a crime problem, only Jackson as a city, is heading in the wrong direction, charlotte is heading up... I almost moved to Memphis...hah, you think Charlotte is scary. |

I don't think Charlotte will miss not having someone so small minded living there.

Oh and there's another robbery/rape in Charlotte yesterday... http://charlotte.com/115/story/59562.html Or how about this story of the Cornelius resident. http://charlotte.com/115/story/59666.html Sinking in yet? |

The Cornelius article is a little fetched in my opinion. While in the middle school days I would go over that way and still drive through there with no concern it is becoming the part of Cornelius for the lower income. I would still feel safe walking through there. Just maybe with a flashlight now

And I thought this was kind of interesting to add to the crime thing in general.
http://charlotte.com/115/story/59298.html The residents of Concord sued the city over a construction permit for a SIX story jail. There were other reasons why they had sued the city but still....a six story, 480 bed jail on top of the 96 bed annex they're already building (on top of what they already have). And just another link to look at. Some telling info about the recent pass to go along with the future. http://www.co.cabarrus.nc.us/Jail/beds.html |
