I lived here all my life and I rarely ever had someone ask what church I attend.
If it is ever brought up it just as part of conversation not to divulge information on your religious beliefs. It mainly as part of conversation like what school your kid is going to, what grocery store you going etc.

You might be invited to a pig picking attend your child boy scout ceremony in a church, or pancake dinner but those are base on fellowship except for the benediction.

There is alot of various religious forms in the area so there is options if you do decide you want to attend a service.

I will be down for good in a few weeks and my wife is already there, and we are both from NY. We too hate the other transplants who want to change everything to be a mini NY or wherever they are from. You know what? If you miss NY or some other originating state so much than pack your things and go on back. Life in Charlotte will go on without you. Is there things I will miss about NY? Not many but I will miss certain things like being able to get a typical NY egg sandwich in the morning but I'll adjust and it will give me something to look forward to when I go back to visit. Will I b*tch and belly ache about it? NO!
I typically clump transplants into two categories. 1) Is the young family or young couples looking to start a family or your retirees who are looking for a slower pace and more reasonable cost of living. This group tends to go with the flow and learns to adjust and blend in to their new environment. 2) This is the group that saw the opportunity to cash out on their home that they bought for $120,000 8-10 years ago and can now get $500,000+ and figures they will cash out and buy a home in the Carolinas for cash and still have a pretty hefty nest egg in the bank. This group but not everyone in this category are typically the ones who want to change everything and would prefer that there be a shopping center on every corner and a Starbucks every 1/4 mile. Again, there are exceptions to my observation so please don't flame me by saying, "Yeah we cashed out and don't want to change anything." This is just my observation and my opinion from what I have seen so far in my many visits to my house.
Point to this run on rant. If your not happy with what the Carolinas have to offer than don't move period! Is there things I will miss about NY? Not many but I will miss certain things like being able to get a typical NY egg sandwich in the morning but I'll adjust and it will give me something to look forward to when I go back to visit. Will I b*tch and belly ache about it? NO!

Don't go and try to change things, go with the flow and try to blend in all though it is sometimes hard with our accents. It's when you want to change things or complain that things were done like this or food is like that in NY etc that creates animosity and gives transplants a bad rap. Take all this as a grain of salt as it is just my opinion of things.

I don't know if it's only the northerners moving down here who are the ones... that actually want to change things.... or the developers and loose zoning laws that really bring the ch-ch-ch-changes (as David Bowie sang) to the reality of it all. It's really a wonderful combo of both. Ah... whatever.

But actually... I'm one of them ok northerners (no, seriously..) and until I can get back to where I belong... I would suggest to the pushy NY'ers (whom I do know well... hello!) who are here in NC - to have a fully loaded CD player of The Allman Brothers and Lyrnyrd Skynyrd to help balance yourselves... while you adjust to the changes in latitude. No, seriously - it works. I can be in the middle of strip mall southern hell, 105 degrees....tons of traffic... and if I suddenly hear "Blue Sky" from the Allman Bros. - my world is automatically transformed to where it needs to be. I've ragged on the south before - but damn, I can dig some some of the bands that came from down here.

Ah... but what the heck....in reality, we're all Americans... we should all chill out a bit. North/South...East/West, etc. - And I'm thinking we could just get together for a gigantic group hug? And hey while we're at it, maybe air it on Dr. Phil?

It would probably end up being a Dr. Phil pay per view special. $49.95.

I have to agree with both berk and neo..we are here 45 days now and being born and raised in brooklyn ny let me say this is such a nice change of life...I am a northerner obviously but love the slowness to a point..lol...its easy going no rat race like NY or NJ for that matter and for the most part Ive encountered good experiences from the transplants other than some rude Nyker that was in target complaining about something, well let me say everything..lol. I turned around and said to her because for 10 min she didnt shut up I said then maybe u should just go back to Ny she heard my accent and knew I was from there and was like well Im STUCK here..I said Im sorry u feel that way..and i walked away..grrrrrr those are the ones who make it bad for the rest of us...

Try listening to the Athens, GA boys Widespread Panic. If you like a dash of Skynyrd, a dash of Allmans, and a good dash of the Grateful Dead you'd love 'em. One of the really good times I've had here was catching them in Raleigh back in April. I've seen them before but seeing them closer to their element was pretty great. I'll be going to see them both nights at the Verizon Wireless in Charlotte at the end of this month. I'll use it as a break in the preparation to move back to Jersey.

Great post ! I'm from the North and most of my favorite bands are from the South especially Skynyrd, ZZ top and Molly Hatchet.

So first of all I would challenge you to find a native Charlottean. In that respect, you will have nothing to worry about.

Sadly, this is the fate of most every southern city (and smaller towns for that matter). And it is also a source of the dislike of northerners by some southerners.

Anyway, in the end I'm sure North Carolina will be re-named New New York, and South Carolina changed to New New Jersey. (kidding of course...but it seems possible..)

I think the main anti-northerner thing comes from the last time Northerners flocked south. During reconstruction Northern "carpetbaggers" only wanted to take advantage of the destroyed South. They bought out almost all local businesses, made the poor white man even poorer, and had no other intention except self-profit. These carpetbaggers basically put a leash on the South that restricted growth and delayed the process of rebuilding. While the carpetbaggers made loads of cash, Southerners starved and were jobless, and the South remained a poor region until after WWII.

...and other than the cultural extinction, thats the only reason i can think of that would cause this animosity.

Now is it more prevalent in day-to-day society? You bet. Is it invasive? Generally no, unless you're looking to put that label on any mention of the religion.

This has been my experience, anyway.

I agree and there are actually decent, contemporary churches here that you can go and connect with God and other people and enjoy it rather than falling asleep.
