No!! We are a good natured bunch ! What bugs the natives are comments about what they don't like about the south, or this area in general. It ranges from weather, to the people, to education (or lack of education they think southerners have). I don't think the comments are made toward the people they are speaking to when they make them, but it is still "our" place you are talking about and "our" people.
ONE big issue that I think most people from the north have a problem with... and I have a problem with them having the problem .... SNOW!!!! AND our ability or inability to deal with it "like they did at home". Here, we don't get that much snow!! SO, why in the world would we buy and maintain expensive equipment for the rare occassions when we need it? It is simply nuts to me to even consider the thought. We have other issues here to consider that don't involve snow "yous guys" need to understand that it is just common sense that we'd forgo the snow equipment for something more necessary. As for whether the drivers are good or bad at driving in it... that is unquestionable... those who know their limits (the smarter of us) usually aren't the ones you see in a ditch on the side of 485. Those are usually the ones who boast too much about how well their SUV drives in the snow... which BTW is usually ice around here and THAT is a whole other issue....
OK, SO in summary. I, personally, really like the Yanks, they are fun to be around!! I laugh most when I'm with my more northern friends!! Just don't bash US... you made the choice to come here, we didn't come drag you from your nice warm beds ! We are a little different than you might be used to, but we are good folks!!

I understand what you are saying 100%. I am looking to leave Camden County in South Jersey. We don't get much snow either. Some years, almost nothing, other years ice storms, then there's the nor'easters..... I don't know how many big plows the county has now, but at one point it was 3. I live in a fairly large township & if we get snow, when the township gets to my street, I get to laugh at the contraction that is used to mow high school fields with a plowing blade slapped on it. Sometimes it's a pickup with a blade slapped on it.
I grew up in Michigan, but learned to drive in South Jersey. I'm just as petrified of snow as anyone else in South Jersey or Philly (that's almost everyone....)
Around here, when it snows, everyone runs to the store for bread, milk, & eggs, but if a nor'easter is coming, they strip the shelves.
When I get moved, if snow comes, I'll be the Yankee over there in the corner, petrified.

It only appears that we can't drive in the snow because we never get past the learning curve. No matter where one lives, they have to readjust to snow and ice. I lived in northern Minnesota, Alaska, Nebraska and other cold areas. The first major snow storm or ice storm brings numerous accidents. No matter if you are in Charlotte or Minneapolis, it is bad during that first episode. One thing that I remember as being humorous some time back when I lived in South Carolina wto northerners as having listened to northerners constantly discuss southerners not being able to drive in the snow and seeing practically all cars in ditch from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and other points north. Goes to show you. We're all guilty. Besides, how much common sense does it take to know that you drive slowly and don't overcompensate on ice.

I am a Charlotte native. Those of us from here have been bonded by all of the northerners moving in. I just think it's annoying... When will it end? Why does being from a state north of Virginia make you rude and obnoxious? If I hear one more northerner say "you think this is cold? This is nothing"... or comment about how "your whole city shuts down after a snow flurry"... I'm going to flip. I spent a year sneaking up on the Taliban in sub zero temperatures, but does that mean that a 40 degree night is not cold to me?
The biggest problem is Charlotte's loss of identity. Charlotte actually used to be part of North Carolina. We used to be part of the heritage you can hear in people's voices in places like Greenville, NC. Dilworth, for example, is where my family lived for over 50 years. Dilworth was an all american area. I'd hardly call it that now.
Now... as far as what I DO like about it... I think northerners are behind rennaissance's like NoDa and Plaza-Midwood. Keep that up. Charlotte had some scary areas that used to make me shutter before I became a Ranger. I'm actually thinking of buying a home on the outskirts of one of these areas. I know crime is bad, but I pity the poor soul that tries to mug myself or any other US Special Forces operative... OK rambling now. That's my .02.

Actually, I was speaking w/ a member of the DAR this past weekend, and she advises that the latest estimates are that only one person out of 60 is an actual son or daughter or the South these days. How bout that. 1:60. I know people come here and are here one generation and call themselves Southerners, but we are talking Southerners who settled the land here . . . and some of us have families that go back over 250 years.
No, it is not the South I grew up in. In some ways, that is a good thing. We are fully integrated and those sad decades that preceded integration are over (altho I am sure for some, the scars remain). I told my friend - "Well, this is the New South now."
Her reply? "What the hell does that mean - the New South?"
Hee Hee Hee.

Wow. As a new "northerner" in the Charlotte area, I'll sure remember to avoid making small talk about where I came from. I had no idea people here were so offended by us talking about "up north." Where I come from, "up north," people have a sense of humor and are able to joke about their backgrounds and regional habits and not take offense. Ever think that someone saying "this isn't cold, this is nothing" isn't bragging about how resilient they are but rather are praising the better weather down here?

It's not about the small talk, it is about the attitude. There are some people who are genuinely critical and complaining about the new town they have moved to, can't imagine why they do 'such and such' here when 'such and other' works so much better....like they used to do it in *insert previous city here*. That's about all you ever hear from them and it gets old fast.
It isn't unique to Charlotte area, it happens everywhere. I don't think it is tolerated anywhere very well. However, up north people will just ignore you because thats how Yankees are. Here you will get an eye roll and a 'bless your heart' and then people will ignore you.
Worded a bit differently from another post (similar topic), you can't go and p*ss in the neighbor's backyard and expect a warm welcome.
