Wondering what I can do now for some immediate impact this year?

Hey there!!!

I dont know of any bulbs that would have immediate impact.. although, i would love to know myself.

I planted bulbs for the first time this past October... but I got real lazy and frustrated and didnt plant all the bulbs correctly. And Im so upset, because right now I have beautiful tulips blooming and dafodils... I know I would have more if I gave the planting process a chance.

For immediate impact, some of the garden centers have pre-planted, blooming bulbs in pots. You could bring those home and add those to some decorative pots at your entrance. Then, you could plant them in your yard next fall. Actually, I just leave my bulbs in the pots. I plant pansies over them in the fall, and today, I have tulips and daffodils coming up through my pansies. Beautiful!

Default Summer flowering??

Are you interested in summer or autumn flowering bulbs (which would be planted in Feb - March - April) or spring flowering bulbs (which are usually planted in in autumn)?

Not sure how all of these summer flowering bulbs would do in our climate, but here is a list to start with. You could contact a NC Extension Service office and get more specifics, they are usually very helpful for our micro-regions.

* Agapanthus
* Amaryllis
* Dahlia gladiolus
* tuberous Begonia
* poppy anemone
* Peruvian daffodil
* Persian buttercup
* jacobean lily
* calla lily

Oh, we use the word "bulb" loosely. Some "bulbs" are corms, some are rhizomes, tubers, or tuberous roots.

Can also plant daylilies or gladiolas in spring. Also perennials like mums, daisys, etc.

I've just started doing some gardening around our new home, and I'd like to know more about growing bulbs, as opposed to picking up blooming annuals and perennials like I've been doing from the big stores.

Are bulbs hardier? Easier to grow? Are only certain kinds of flowers frown from bulbs?

thanks!

Numerous summer-blooming "bulbs" (not always bulbs) are in the stores now. I got an assortment at Aldi & Ingles.
