Charlotte English Teachers
I'm moving from Pittsburgh, PA to Charlotte, NC at the end of April. I just graduated from University of Pittsburgh in Secondary English Education. My boyfriend has a job down at Bank of America in the heart of Charlotte where our apartment is located. I wanted ask if any Charlotte English teachers could give me some background info on schools around the area. I'm certified to teach grades 7-12. I don't know the area very well so I want to make sure the school and area is safe. We are willing to move outside of the city if need be. Any feedback will be great! Thank you!

Please know that Char-Meck is in a virtual hiring freeze at this moment and will even likely lay off teachers. Despite that, you may find a position in the district or surrounding districts... just may not have the luxury of being picky about the school.

Thank you for your input! By any change do you off hand any of the surrounding districts or counties that have a good reputation to look into?

Since you are specializing in English, I wouldn't discount looking into meck schools. Teachers with specialities are always in more demand.

Regarding surrounding counties, check out York in SC.
Charlotte Observer columnist Kay McSpadden is an English teacher at York Comprehensive High and often writes about her classroom and school for the Observer. You might enjoy her columns, some of which are available online, and her book "Notes from a Classroom."

It would be easier if you were certified in science or math. The city is anticipating huge lay offs in the system. I would contact privates schools in the area.

English isn't a specialty per se. You have to have an area to teach on the secondary level.
Union County is growing like a weed and may need English teachers.
