ok... this is a pet issue. Rather than get all huffy about our citizens' seemingly overwhelming preponderance for fear/loathing/hate/ill-will for all natural things in my beloved southern ecosystem (and especially snakes) I thought I'd use this opportunity to spread a little knowledge and hopefully save a snake life or two...
I have a little quiz set up... can anyone identify which of the following North Carolina snakes are poisonous? Extra credit awarded for identification...
1.
2.
3.
4.

Great pictures. I agree. Was not trying to put out fear just to be aware. There are more "good" snakes then bad. I don't believe in harming them unless they are poisoneous and in your yard. Like we told my grandson "just leave the snake alone"!
One day last week I opened up our patio door and there was a small (baby?) snake right at the door sniffing around. Looking at the pictures posted I think it looked like number one, possibly number five. I've lived in Charlotte five years and this is the first snake I've seen. Growing up and living in the country I'm used to seeing snakes, although they freak me out I know they want to get away from me just as much as I want to get away from them.
That is an awesome looking snake NY.. I use to own a snake, I like them they make pretty good pets. But I know so many people can be skerred. Just let them be. Right.
Here we go:
1. Ribbon snake
2. Not sure but harmless (a marsh snake)
3. black rat snake
4. green snake
5. water snake (non-poisonous)
6. Worm snake
7. Corn snake (sometimes called a rat snake)
8. Pine snake (That is what we called them in Florida. similar markings of a timber rattler or pigmy rattler. The shape of the head isn't viper shapped and the pupils of the eyes are round which indicate that they aren't poisonous)
9. Copperhead (poisonous)
10. King or scarlet snake. Same color marking as a coral snake, but the color sequences are different. (Red on yellow, stay away from that fellow).
Thanks to those that spare the lives of non-poisonous snakes. Remember, they have their place in nature. They kill rats, other unpleasant rodents and other poisonous snakes. Snakes will run from humans and are not aggressive in the U.S.
