I think both Concord and Rock Hill will be the 100,000 plus suburbs of Charlotte in the near future. I also think that Hickory and Mooresville, maybe Statesville and Monroe, will surpass 100,000 as well. Concord, Kannapolis and Salisbury could possibly grow into each other, now that the Biotech campus is open in Kannapolis. I would say Huntersville, but I don't think they will have enough land to do so, since Charlotte gobbles up most of the land in Mecklenburg!
I lived in Monroe for a year, it has nothing unless u like small towns with a main street and jam packed 74. It's close to the desire-able south east end of Charlotte but that's about it.
I'll post what's in the Gaston Gazette. I'll even check the Shelby Star for you, since both papers compete for readers in Kings Mountain. (There's ~ 11 or 12K people in City of Kings Mountain & about twice as many people in the unincorporated areas surrounding the city.)
I first heard of the train in an article in the Kings Mountain Herald which is not online. It's a weekly. Feel free to come to the library in Kings Mountain & check. Welcome to MauneyLibrary.org In that article, it told of a commuter rail line from Kings Mountain to Shelby to Boiling Springs. I posted a thread to see if anyone else knew anything, since this sounded strange but would make a certain amount of sense if it connected to something east of here. Lumbollo knew about the Charlotte/Gastonia line & I found documentation. http://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...orman-rpo.html
As of the last time that I looked, the newspaper documentation is spotty & pretty much ends with the state takeover of the project. There has to be something somewhere, but I'm not certain where, & Lumbollo hasn't been posting for a while. He would probably be able to dig something up on the state plans.
This reminds me of the Indian casino project Indians had planned in Kings Mountain (they're federally recognized?!). I haven't heard anything about that in years. The one in Murphy was successful after a land purchasing issue, worked out well, now anytime I go up there I can't find good parking.
OK, before I get busy & forget about this, here's what I found. This all predates NCDOT coming to Kings Mountain & telling them about the commuter line. As I said in my thread, Kings Mountain makes sense, Shelby sort of makes sense, but Boiling Springs? That only makes sense if the train is going somewhere from Boiling Springs.
This is from the Shelby Star & refers to the state looking at floating a bond for rail projects & states that it would include Gastonia. Since a piece of Kings Mountain sits in Gaston County, by the map on the Lake Norman RPO website, that piece is within the Charlotte metro area. I don't know if that means that they could run the train from Charlotte to Gastonia to Kings Mountain from this bond, if they build the Kings Mountain park & ride station on the Gaston County side of town. Your guess is as good as mine on that.

Why not just have a sizeable park and ride in Gastonia? People who live in Kings Mountain will have to drive either way, being a non-urban town. People in other metros do it all the time, drive to a park and ride and take a train the rest of the way.
I was walking around DT Rock Hill during my break the other day and I have to say I was a bit disappointed to find no crosswalks. Other than that, I find no complaints.
I have no idea why so many people say Rock Hill, that place is backwards. As you said crosswalks are even hard to come by in that city. SC is relatively backwards, probably the most backward in the entire country and it shows in Rock Hill as well. Luckily it's there for people who want a safe place to live that's pretty and reasonable, but no bus system? Just how are they suppose to become a real city?

There's a reason for a park & ride in Kings Mountain. It would be closer for people in Cherryville, Bessemer City, Grover, & people in northern Cherokee County. It would keep all of those cars out of Gastonia.
ETA: people in Gastonia can take a bus to a train. Why eat up the space for a large parking lot for people who are nearer to Kings Mountain? A smaller lot can be built for people in Dallas & Lincoln County.

A month or two ago WSOC reported that since the 2010 census, Gastonia has added 31K, Concord has added 34K, & Huntersville was in between. It looks like Gastonia & Concord will top 100K by the 2020 census.
What's the hold up? I read it's suppose to be a 0.2-1 billion dollar project. I think it will be built but that's also a lot of money. I think the Kings Mountain residents must also be opposed to the idea, being a "small town" type of place. People don't want taxes to be driven up.
