Living in charlotte but working in winston-salem
Does anyone or do you know of anyone who has lived in or near Charlotte but commutes to Winston-Salem for work? If so, how is that working out? I'm asking because that could be my situation soon and I'm trying to weigh my options. I'm currently living out of state but if I move to NC I'm only considering moving to or near Charlotte.

If gas prices do not concern you and you don't mind traveling, I think that is a great idea. However, honestly I don't recommend that for you. Winston is a pretty nice area and one of the finer NC cities. And to answer your other questions I do not know of anyone who has lived in Charlotte but commuted to Winston, so my comments are purely opinionated. Good luck with your decision and welcome to NC either way.

I work for a company that has offices in Winston and Charlotte. There are some employees who travel from Charlotte to Winston once or twice a week and dread it. As well there are some that will work for extended days in Winston, and the business puts them up in hotels to save on the commute. From hearing firsthand about the drive everyday, I would not recommend it.

Not directly on point, but I have a coworker who commuted on a daily basis between Charlotte and Durham for years. She lived in Highland Creek, so she was on the east/north side of Charlotte which facilitated the drive.
She said to me that it was not a problem because it was all highway driving. She was an administrator at a University, and now she works in Charlotte exclusively. She told me that it was about a 2 hour drive each way, daily, except for maybe one or two days a week, depending on schedule.
Highway driving, clear and straight, is very different from city stop and go traffic. Easier I think.
It would pay to find out what areas are suburbs of Charlotte on the side of your destination city. but of course you already know that!

I commuted from Winston to Charlotte for a couple weeks before I moved here, it wasn't horrible. But I come from AZ, where I had a 60 to 90 minutes commute every day. A lot would depend on which part of the city you are are talking. Are you talking about living in Huntersville and driving to Advance? or licing in South Carlotte and Driving to downtown Winston?

I'm not sure where in charlotte but if the commute has to be made it would be cities north of Charlotte along I-77 or NW I-85. I figured the distance wouldn't be too bad from those areas. It would be near downtown Winston.

Just curios...why are you considering Charlotte over Winston-Salem or Greensboro?

I had a coworker who did the reverse for over a year. She lived in Belews Creek and commuted to uptown eveyday. She just last fall had to quit and take a job in Greensboro due to having a kid. As you can imagine, there was little time for family in the evenings. The good job which she had been at for years is what kept her here. It ended up just being too much.

Forget that. Just makes no sense. I expect to some that chose to do it, the commute becomes their "Red Badge of Courage." Also Forget I-85, you would want to go 77/40. They are sooner or later going to start work N of Salisbury on the bridges over the Yadkin, and that, in all likelihood will doom that stretch for years.
Maybe consider living in Salisbury, many commute from there to Charlotte, G-boro and Winston. Have a daughter at NC School of the Arts in Winston, and family in Salisbury. They drive that all the time and is NOTHING to them.
Good Luck, but please don't let yourself be convinced you want to do the Charlotte - Winston thing.
