Where does this President get his info? He is promoting nurse education and drawing this picture of a severe shortage of nurses and that just ain't correct! There is a shortage only in some regions (rural, poor) and the nurses who are needed are often specialists.
Also, what the Pres is not revealing is that the legislation only offers grants to minorities. Now, that ain't right, either. Perhaps this has been changed but I am absolutely positive that was part of the original bill (Kennedy legislation) as I read it myself.
NC (and many other states) already have in place funding for grants/scholarships for certain healthcare students who agree to work in underserved areas (and those areas are underserved b/c the pay is less and these are often at least somewhat isolated communities).
I am tired of spin! It is really frightening to think that legislation is gonna be passed w/ one level of expectation from the public - and then when it's too late and the laws are in place . . . we all find out - WOOPS!!! - misrepresentation (of course, we will be told we just "misunderstood").

SUPERK: what gets me is, Congress could quickly pass a few things such as prohibiting denial of insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions - w/ a few pages of legislation. I don't get it! If they want to help everyone - just do some things that make total sense and would have an immediate effect in helping families all over the country. If they need to spend two years figuring out REAL healthcare reform - FINE! But this insurance stuff - that could be taken care of IMMEDIATELY.
I get very discouraged w/ the bureaucracy.
I hope someone out there in a leadership role is listening.

Today is a big day for my DH. Interviews at 9:30 am and 3 pm. I'm trying to remain hopeful, optimistic and supportive, but in reality I am stressed out, nervous and anxious. I don't think either one of us slept much last night.

We are pulling for you . . . hope things go very well for him!
I don't think anyone can understand just how stressful it is to be unemployed (or underemployed) until they have been through it. It really is one of life's most challenging situations.
Try to do something good for yourselves, even if it is just having a picnic out in a park. A change of scenery can be a refreshing break.
I have a good feeling about this job! Keeping my fingers crossed and saying prayers for you all!

I still remember like it was yesterday
I was only unemployed once in my life and thankfully it came very early in my work career. I was fired two days before Thanksgiving. No notice, just walk to your desk, get your friggen paper clips and tape despenser and leave. Fortune 500 company. In this day and age that would never happen as they would get sued for a gazzillion million dollars. But what did I know being young, scared and thinking, hey the're right!
Three months later (Feb) I went into business for myself and never looked back. In all the years that I owned a printing factory I never forgot that incident when Thanksgiving was around the corner. And during all the time I was in biz I NEVER let anyone go from Thnaksgiving until after the first of the year. It just wasn't in me.
You're right Ani, one cannot understand the stress unless you've been there.
On the bright side, me getting fired was the best thing that ever happen to me.
John

You were born an entrepreneur. You probably were trading off your tuna sammich for some other kid's Bazooka bubblegum at age six.
