I'm home from South Jersey, but last night was a real experience. Going up last week, I saw signs at the rest stops in Virginia that they were closing on 7/21. Last night every single rest stop on 95 was closed (barricaded). That meant that between Laurel MD & the NC Welcome Center there is now no place to pull over & rest, etc..

I checked online & VDOT has closed 25 rest stops to shift those funds to other uses.

Don&#39t close rest stops, speakers urged VDOT | Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://www.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/VDOTGAT27_20090326-215815/242015/ - broken link)

Just a heads up to anyone needing to travel through VA, on any route.

That's an understatement. I assumed that the facilities would be closed, because of the notices, but thought I could park there & sleep a while. I had been up for a funeral, etc. & had a late start back. I was not a happy camper.

This is bad news not only for regular drivers but truck drivers as well.

Absolutely, & I know that we have some truckers on this.

It might not be so bad in the daytime, but it was awful at night. Plus I ran into fog south of Petersburg. Yeah, this was a real brilliant move.

If there was a viable alternative, that would be one thing, but for many of us, the choice is VA or VA.

If they just locked the buildings & left access to the parking lots it wouldn't be so bad.

That's exactly what DH said, why can't they leave the lots open? Now the truckers will have to find the closest Lowe's, HD, Wal-mart or Target parking lot. DH really relies on the rest stops as a lot of times the truck stops are already filled up when he's ready to pull over for the night.

Just glad you made it back safely.

That's really bad, do you have the option of taking Rt.77 > 81 > Pennsy Tpk? I hate Rt. 95, there's always some issue happening, 77 is far less stressful of a drive, and plenty of rest areas and quick on/off gas stations and food stops...
