Oh, I wouldn't resign myself to formula restaurants just yet. I've found plenty of independent restaurants in Charlotte and the surrounding areas.
I would be so bold as to say that The Penguin reminds me of Kuma's Corner. Something caught my eye in Creative Loafing the other week about the Crepe Cellar. If it is as good as the Icosium Kafe in Andersonville, then there's all the more reason to visit NoDa.
There have only been a handful of food items I've yet to locate here in the Queen City that would be wonderful. Chicago style pizza being number one. New Yorkers have a mighty good pie, but I have always liked Chicago style the most. If anyone knows of a restaurant serving a faithful represenation of it, please let me know. Something like a Pizano's would work for me (I know Chicago's honeycombed with many more mom & pop's that would trounce it, but just sayin' what I would take).
OK, I'll stop rambling on about food. It is one of my favorite things. Seriously, it's not as bad as you think.

Pizzeria Uno. It is a chain of the original that is in New Town in Chicago. Excellent. Not Lou Malnati's, but, still very good.

I had no idea Charlotte had an Uno's! I've been down around that area before, too. I must be blind. You learn something new everyday. Thank you.

Yes!! So jealous! What I wouldn't do for an Italian beef with sweet peppers and cheese fries from Portillo's I'm not from Chicago but traveled there for work so much I felt like a resident.

Originally from Northwest Indiana. That's essentially Chicago, i mean we always had Chicago tv and radio stations. Born a Cubs fan.
