I'm not actually from Chicago, I'm from St. Louis, but I have many friends in Chicago and I used to visit all the time.
You can count me in if anyone wants to order some Portillos Hotdogs or Italian Beef to be shipped here for a Chicago food party. Let me know if anyone wants to make that happen.

My mistake, I thought the thread about Charlotte was for people from Charlotte as well. Silly me.
I do not plan to argue school systems with you, but, let me say that it is not only the quality of school but the programs offered. The programs that are here are far inferior to the programs offered in the city.
-What peograms are far inferior? Please tell me. As a former educator, I am very curious.
these folks adjust to their new home, then, I don't think that this thread is for you.

-Yes, but on occasion, I have observed personal bias stand in the way of reality. I gave some data that I am sure you likely hate to see, but it was information that a newcomer might want to consider. In reality, a child probably has as good as as good of an opportunity to excel in our system as in the one from which you were part. We do no good in presenting negatives or prejudiced images to newcomers based on personal experiences that aren't typical. According to the top 100 schools in the country, Illinois isn't fairing very well.
- You are ususally one of the very first to jump on the bandwagon and present negatives about this area. That is O.K., but if I want to debate misleading information, I am allowed to do that as well. When I mention that I like people from Chicago and say that I have found them to be very nice and hospitable, you confront me and argue that people there are not friendly and hospitable. What do you want?
- Telling me that this thread isn't for me is like telling you that the thread in which people were discussing local history wasn't for you. This is an open forum for eveyone and if I want to present facts, which I enjoy doing, I will.

Born and raised in the Region - wife (from Pittsburgh) and I met at Purdue, recently lived in River North for a year before moving to Concord / University Area.
Way too many Cubs fans on this board. Anyone here a fan of the White Sox - a real baseball team with a shiny World Series ring from this century?
Kidding - it's baseball season, and I thought I'd stir the pot a little...
One thing I think we'll all agree on is the excitement around the Bears FINALLY having a quarterback to write home about. Football season can't come quick enough.
Sampstar - where in the Region are you from?
Here's a question for the group? Any decent Greek restaurants or a place to get a solid takeout Gyro?

Try Showmars. They are Greek. Actually, any of the privately owned restaurants are mostly Greek. But, I think you can get what you want at Showmars.
Orangish is a new transplant here...and, he is a Sox fan. You do know that the Charlotte Knights are a feeder team for the Sox, right?
See, this thread is bringing together people that think alike and I am not even bashing the Sox fans!!

Really? Nothing against them - because I'm open-minded and occassionally have a taste for something like that - but I always thought Showmars was a greasy Waffle House-type joint... Had no clue it was Greek-owned (as you said, many family restaurants are).
Yep knew about the AAA Knights - planning on catching a game next Saturday. My cousin from Tinley Park is in town. Excited to see some of the South Siders' up-and-comers. Any ideas on what I can do to entertain him beyond that?
I'm with you chicagocubs...nowhere for day drinking! I live in Concord, so I rarely get Uptown or to South Charlotte. Shame that's where all the best restaurants and bars are... What would be cool is if they open an Irish pub or a sports bar up here near Highland Creek.
Orangish - our Sox are in desperate need of a leadoff hitter. I'm not panicking yet, but the bats need to come alive, and I'm concerned DeWayne Wise is just not the catalyst we need.
RE: Chicago Pizza - I love Lou Malnati's, but occassionally I admit I get the craving for Aurelio's. The sauce has a sweet taste I haven't seen replicated anywhere. It also reminds me of post-Friday night high school football games.

One of the best things about Chicagoans - our passion for sports.
You can have a group of guys who are bitter rivals during baseball season spewing venom against one another during the Crosstown Classic unite to cheer a certain football team, which has carved out a special place in the pantheon of professional football greats.
That team, which is known the world over, as... Da Bears!
I'll keep it tame, guys (notice I didn't say - and refuse to ever resort to saying - "y'all")... but I must admit - I love the banter.

Yep and our passions run deep. We are not likely to jump from team to team depending upon who is winning... I am a diehard Cubs fan and always will be. There was never any baseball shown on my TV unless it involved the Cubs and I will never go to a game unless the Cubs are playing. (We are traditionalists, too ) My Cubs flag goes out when they play the first game at Cubs park of the season...THAT is when the season begins as far as I am concerned.
It's good to know that there are Chicagoans close by...I live in the U/C area...someone to understand the language!! ha, ha, ha!
