You have a state (North Caroliina) that is literally broke w/the unemployment rate skyrocketing faster than the national average.
Transplants STILL are moving here and adding to the labor pool which is not helping. Thus, this will continue to drive the rate much higher and add to the negative news.
I predict later this year the national media will start to turn its attention to this area (instead of Detroit) and advise how bad the unemployment situation will get...
If people in this area want employment to stabilize, the media needs to let the country know that you can't move here w/o a job. Up to this point, its been the reverse, and financial porn magazines like Fortune and Money have just written sunshine articles on how things are great here (which predictably, some people have taken as being true.....)
It has to happen to stop this freight train.......
This is so true. Many natives Charlotteans and others who have lived here for years are finding the employment situation very volatile right now and the newcomers driving in with their U-Hauls and no secured employment add to the stress. It's not a good situation at all and getting worse. Something got to give soon. I feel for everybody across the nation looking for honest work to support themselves and their families. I just wish people would be a little more focused and work a plan/strategy - you don't need money to do that, just time, some decent research and planning skills. Like one poster stated, in today's current job environment "a wing and a prayer" is not enough.

Coupon, I said the same thing to a friend last week. Charlotte could easily become the next "Detroit" in the nation's eyes. Especially, with banks reporting their earnings soon as the "stress" tests reports coming out shortly. Bad news on either one of those fronts could essentially push us over the edge. While places like GMAC and some other small companies announce jobs, the net effect is job loss. I never would have believed our unemployment rate had you told me this 2-3 years ago. We shall see....
I tell folks this ALL THE TIME - problem is that I don't think they are listening!
Live in Columbus OH area and when I open my mouth (Southern accent I get loads of questions regarding wanting info on Charlotte, Triangle & Atlanta areas. Mostly wait staff in restuarants and sales associates in retail, etc. I tell them of friends and family in the South that are unemployed or people they know that are unemployed and not to move without jobs - but I think I might as well be talking to a wall.
I think our unemployment rate here in central OH isn't that bad and IMO this is a great place to live - but everyone still wants to be South.
Promise I will keep trying to convince folks to stay put

Can you blame people for wanting to get out of 6+ months of gray skies and chilly temps every year? I seriously growing up in NE OH and going to OSU and then working in Columbus, OH had major depression issues b/c of the overcastness. (I forget what that is called)...but, the Columbus area is a bit isolated from this downtown b/c of the amount of gov't jobs there, but I would bet companies like The Limited, AF, Huntington Bank, and Nationwide Ins I'm sure are feeling the affects of the economy.
Good luck keeping them up there, but if they line up a job beforehand, then more power to them.

Well today the CEO sent a message to one of the news stations and said the office of Gov. Bev Perdue ignored their invite to talk and they didn't even reply back...

That's scary BigJon, I am in MI and might have a job interview in Charlotte soon. If she says "And in 5 years, you will be blown away", RUN!!!!
This whole area up here is very depressing, empty stores, bad roads, poorly run city of Detroit, and our trees have FINALLY just begun to bud.
