Swiss Cantons proudly display their differences in region yet as a whole are Swiss.
Why deny the NC [and the South] any of these similar aspirations in a nation which is made up of 'united' 'states'?
Excuse me, but I find your view extremely myopic.
I would never wish your hometown to be any different than you enjoyed it growing up.

Well I am sorry but all places change over time
New York City has changed over time and NYers do not like it. Actually, let me be more specific. Manhattan has changed over time.
Do you have any idea how many millionaires from the south, west coast and all over other countries make a million or two and then buy real estate in Manhattan?
It is made up of the rich, not Nyers. The real NYC is the other 4 bouroughs, long island and north jersey. The transplants moving to Manhattan have turned it into a Disneyland tourist attraction for the wealthy (especially times square).
Charlotte is in the stages of becoming a medium city, from a small city.
Think of Charlotte as a child...... it is growing up and over time it will change, maybe not for the better.

--Charlotte is at least a medium size city presently. It is the 18th largest city (city limits) and around around number 32 for metro area. That is hardly small. There are over 10,000 municipalities, towns, and cities in the U.S. being in the top 50 wouldn't qualify it as small. Yet, Charlotte is definately not New York, London, or Paris either.

The people who have moved into Manhattan HAVE TO BE WEALTHY to afford it. And as far as newcomers who have "changed" Manhattan - those are more often FOREIGNERS than SOUTHERNERS.
As far as Charlotte changing, I predict the growth is coming to a screeching halt and thank God it is. We have a strong workforce; we need more businesses. Bigger is not necessarily BETTER and our infrastructure is already stressed.
The only good thing I can see out of the Banking debacle here is that now that we are not going to be promoted as "the second largest banking center in the South," perhaps people will slow down the migration here.

IMO, Charlotte feels very small
It only has 2.2 million people in the metro.
What one person considers small feels large to another.
I have lived in Philly, Phoenix and Dallas
The smallest out of those 3 cities that i have lived is phoenix, which has 4.2 million. That is almost double charlotte.

One person's 'small' is another's 'just right'.

I disagree. It will still be there in some form or another. As much emphasis as we put on the Northern transplants, most people migrating to metro Charlotte are still native Southerners. I'm more likely to run into someone here originally from Charleston or Winston-Salem than someone from Jersey.
