Here's another idea ... the health care field will be strong ... could you learn more about how you could use your background in finance within the health care industry? What about business analyst, financial analyst, but with a health care industry twist?

Could you talk to people at the hospitals and possibly at various schools (UNC, CPCC, etc etc)?

Would seem a shame to leave your financial background behind ... that might the thing that helps you make some money!

I would check out IT jobs with your current employer first since you have some connections there. I moved to IT from Construction about 6 years ago and took a huge pay cut starting as a help desk technician. I eventually got a job with Deloitte on the help desk, then worked my way into IT Audit as part of their audit group. Now I make almost twice I did in construction and really enjoy it - plus I travel all around the world since I came to Charlotte and work with an aerospace company. I got a lot of good breaks along the way.

Starting out fresh in IT is very difficult unless you know people, which I didn't unfortunately. But like someone else said, prepare to take a huge pay cut if you can even get hired.
I would stay away from programming and database administration - those fields are easily outsourced to india. If you can get a compliance job (preparing IT for audits) that would be a good direction to go.
