You've succinctly nailed the theme of many threads as of late
I love the NY accent, and particularly the raised in Brooklyn accent. You should consider that many northern families moving this way share similar values to you. Nearly everyone wants, a family environment, so you're going to find a similar ilk among your peers here.
As far the old south feel, hmm, you may want to also consider Columbia/Charleston,SC.
Are there ANY people moving to Charlotte this year or next, who are NOT from NJ or NY??
Please?!?
I feel as though Union County is turning into "Little New Jersey"...ugh!
I dont think AOYAS concern is unfounded. Driving down the road seems like Im in a different state due to all the out of state tags here.
Different parts of the country are, well, different. Certain areas have different cultures, politics, tastes, etc...We all know that.
But people who move far away from home to NC cant help but want some of the amnemities from back home. Developers are more than happy to accomodate them. We have even had countless threads over the past year on here that go something like this "Where are all the transplants" or "What do you miss from the state of ____" and on and on.
If you look on the city of Mooresvilles website, the home page has a picture of its downtown, but a more accurate portrayal of Mooresville would be its big box stores and parking lots, and traffic, on the lake or roads. Most citys here particulary those close to Charlotte in either direction have been 'built up' within the past 5 years, Id say these cities like Huntersville, Mooresville, have added about 75% on to their cities within the past 5 years. The native population is probably heavily outnumbered now by newcomers. That means simple Southern things like an accent or hospitality are now a part of history.
But there is hope for you AOYAS. There are many small towns and mid size cities in NC that have alot of 'South' to them still! But Charlotte is not one of them. Not to say Charlotte is a bad place because its not. Charlotte tries to hold on to its Southern themes like NASCAR, or simply its geographical location.
It's really funny to read the posts by AOYAS! It is a darn shame that this person has such a negative outlook with regard to "northeasterners". Maybe it comes from just not having met any of the "nice" transplants. I don't know why you have such an "entitlement" attitude regarding changes in the community. The reality is that EVERY community undergoes some changes - whether it be from an influx of foreigners, transplants, or simply changing attitudes. I am sure there were those in the 50's and 60's bemoaning integration. I guess you would have been one of them from the sound of your posts. Truly a sorry commentary.
I appreciate that the moderator deleted that post...the post was uncalled for. Except for that person's post, this was and is a perfectly civilized thread, concerning a very valid discussion, for which many people are in agreement, and many are in disagreement. Whether or not a person agrees or disagrees with another poster, each person should certainly be allowed to post his or her opinions (so long as you do not break any laws or specifially verbally assault another individual), without being viciously targeted by another. It undermines the entire foundation on which sites such as this are based, when someone believes that they have the right to determine what can and cannot be discussed on these boards, if the discussion is within the rules and boundaries outlined on the site.
My argument is valid, it's legitimate, and I feel that what I say is true. It is obvious that I am not the only one who feels that way, and I wanted to discuss it with others, so that we can all make our decisions in the end, regarding this situation. If you don't agree with me for whatever reason, fine. Post a response...ignore the thread...do whatever you'd like. But, there is no reason to act immaturely and name-call. I have not called anyone a name, I have not made any racist comments (because I am not a racist person), I have not broken any rules of the site. Others shouldn't either.
It's entertaining when I read the posts that some people have written. Discussions such as this, though entirely valid, can make people so defensive. I can just picture the soccer moms getting so distraught because some people have the "nerve" to suggest that their New Jersey ilk are overcrowding the Charlotte suburbs...so they lash out and write the most ridiculous things. I can picture them sending their thread through and thinking, "Ha! Well, I told them!" Riiiiight. Keep telling yourselves that. You just continue to prove me right.
And to whomever pointed out that New Jersey is the Garden State:
Indiana is the Hoosier State
Misouri is the Show Me State
Oklahoma is the Sooner State
Maryland is the Old Line State
What's your point? Are trying to say that New Jersey is covered in gardens? Ha...yeah right. By the way, the term "Garden State" has nothing to do with New Jersey having gardens or being beautiful. I won't give you a history lesson, but...your comment is just sillyand it makes no sense.
My argument is valid, it's legitimate, and I feel that what I say is true.
Forming a part of your argument, about the prevailing accent and intonation of the inhabitants in a given area, is both absurd and superficial.

Agreement by a minority, does not validate an argument.

The majority of the tomatoes consumed in the United States come out of NJ, which has something to do with the 'Garden State' nomenclature.

Sorry, but you're just wrong. California, by far, has grows the most tomatoes consumed in the US...80%, to be exact. And tomatoes have absolutely nothing to do with the "Garden State" nickname. The nickname was given in the 1800's during a speech made in Philadelphia, comparing New Jersey (at that time) to an open-ended barrel full of food and flowers, from which New York picked from one end, and Philadelphia picked from the other. Again, nothing to do with actual gardens, tomatoes, what-have-you.
Also, an argument, by definition, involves an oral or written discussion involving differing points of view. Minority and majority opinion has nothing to do with whethe or not an argument is valid. My argument is definitely valid. Some people are in agreement with me, as was demonstrated on this board, and I'm SURE many more Charlotte residents and people considering moving there, who do not read this board, would agree with me, as well. It's simply the fact that many of the people on this board are from the northeast, so these boards make it seem as though more people oppose my view. When, in reality, I'm sure the majority opinion is with me.
As for the "accent" part of my argument...it is not a part of my argument. My argument is mainly that Charlotte's beauty and class is going downhill, in major part, because of the northeasterners moving out of their dirty, overcrowded, expensive cities in the northeast, and trying to turn Charlotte into a similar place as those they left behind. The accents themselves have nothing to do with my argument, in fact. It's simply an opinion I have formed (and many others agree), based on my experiences, regarding the overall obnoxious-sounding accent that is creeping out of the northeast into southern cities.
This is my last post on this subject, because going back and forth with you is a moot point. I can't bring myself DOWN to your "class" level anymore......
I just wanted to say, please stay in the midwest and do not move to Charlotte. Things here are just wonderful and beautiful and full of southern hospitality.
The only "bad attitude" on this board is you.
THIS IS FOR AOYAS
YES I HAVE HEARD PEOPLE SAY WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE NJ IS....HAVE YOU BEEN TO OLD TAPPEN, GLENROCK, RIDGEWOOD? JUST TO NAME A FEW THE LIST GOES ON, YOU PROBABLY HAVE NOT HEARD BECAUSE ALL YOU SEE ON TV IS THE ARMPIT OF NJ NEWARK THE CRAP.... THIS IS THE CREAM OF THE CROP OF NJ AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL SO UNLESS YOU HAVE NOT BEEN THERE, DON'T COMMENT ON ANYTHING.
I KNOW THAT I WOULD NOT COMMENT ON A PLACE IF I HAD NOT BEEN THERE.
I DO NOT KNOW WHERE THESE OTHER PEOPLE ARE COMING FROM, BUT I BELIEVE WHAT THE PORBLEM IS, IT ALL GOES BACK TO THE CIVIL WAR WITH THE NORTH AND SOUTH.
GET A LIFE AND GET OVER IT NOBODY CARES. WE ARE NOT IN THE 1920'S
