Default The horrible accident in Steele Creek last Saturday

Victims Mourned As Deadly Crash Investigation Continues

I didn't know any of the people involved but this accident just breaks my heart. Three people are dead because of what appears to be carelessness and stupidity. Tonight I was listening to John Hancock's show on WBT.

Disclaimer: I don't know if th following is 100% accurate but this is what John said. Apparently the 20 year old was taking the 11 and 13 year olds home after a trip to Carowinds. The other car that was drag racing was driven by a mother with her two daughters in the car.

The residents of Riverpointe have been trying to get a stoplight put in foe a while now.The NCDOT has said that Crescent Resources LLC, which developed The Palisades, was responsible. Over the years traffic has increased and when The Palisades was built the road was widened. The neighbors requested to have off duty CMPD officers direct traffic during peak times. CMPD said it was too dangerous for the officers. The Riverpointe HOA president contacted the NCDOT three weeks ago saying that traffic was getting worse and someone is going to get killed. The NCDOT didn't respond.

Of course I don't know if a light would have slowed the drivers down.

If justice is served, the mother from the other car will be charged as a conspirator. I'd expect far more out of a grown woman with kids than I would a 20 year old. This was senseless and tragic. Regardless of the outcome, true justice will not be served because 3 innocent people are dead, and their MURDERER walks off scot free.

I just rode back into town on 49 on a motorcycle yesterday (after 250+ miles) and after seeing the news that really had me scared.
Why in the world was a MOTHER with kids in the car racing??

I currently drive a euro delivery (I picked it up in Munich, Germany) BMW and it seems every kid in a hopped-up Civic wants to race - I save it for track days...I just don't understand street racing.

NintyFresh is on a distinguished road
My future mother-in-law works with the mother of the 13 year old that died, and his eldest sister graduated from Clover HS with my fiance. Currently I'm finishing my my junior year at Winthrop, and have to take an English/writing class, though I didn't have her, my professors have been affected by it. Its just such a sad situation.

I just can't believe even a 20 year old was street racing. I don't get it!

I can't believe that a 44-year-old was street racing!

We used to carpool with a family that lives in Riverpointe. I found exiting that subdivision to be dicey - and that was a few years ago BEFORE they widened 49 and opened the Palisades.

I assume the police have some evidence that they were racing but excessive speeding is very common on that road. I've driven that stretch more times than I can count. The speed limit is 55 but people fly down that road. I can have a heavy foot but I've been tailgated and passed by cars going well above the speed limit. I'd guess that many go over 70 mph. It's as if people are in hurry to slow down when they go into SC where the speed limit is 35.

2nd suspect may soon see charges in race

Alleged Camaro Driver Has History Of Speeding Tickets

Quote:
Police said the occupants of the Camaro and the Eclipse, which witnesses said were racing, knew each other.

Witnesses told Eyewitness News they saw the Camaro stop after the crash and the occupants got out, surveyed the wreckage, and then left the scene.
Investigators said Monday they were working with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the driver of the Camaro could face charges. They have not released any more details on possible charges or the crash.

Atkinson’s attorney, Tobias Horne, confirmed to Eyewitness News that reports say Atkinson was the driver of the Camaro, but he would not say whether she actually was behind the wheel. He said he and his client are concerned about the victims’ families, and said he couldn’t comment further at this time.
Have I been watching too much Court TV (now In Session), is he trying to infer something? Or just being vague/confusing for his client's sake?

I keep reading this story and listening to any reports . . . and I just can't untangle it. My mind cannot grasp anyone participating in street racing, but for an adult to be involved . . . I just can't fathom it. I keep thinking about the loss of life and how this should NEVER have happened and I can't come to terms w/ what would propel an adult to act like a total idiot and endanger others. Even speeding w/ children in the car is risky enough but to RACE? What kind of parent would do that?

Even if she was not driving the car, how could she have allowed such behavior to take place IN her car? And in addition - as an adult - she should have made sure they didn't leave the scene of the accident!

A 40-something year old woman who owns a Camero she's gotten speeding ticket after speeding ticket for driving since 2002 has a real maturity problem. And God help us, SHE'S A MOTHER HERSELF. I hope she is hanging her head in shame and lives with intense grief the rest of her life for what she's done.
