My wife and I were driving around Charlotte today and for some reason I took notice of the excessive amounts of trash (Household & Commercial) on I-485, specifically between the Carolina Place Mall exit and Johnston Rd, and also on the side roads. I know this was discussed a lot in the Observer recently and the last I heard that they were employing an outside contractor to pick up around the city.

It bothers me, because Charlotte is such a beautiful city and people are so irresponsible to allow their trash to blow out of their vehicles or simply throw trash out on the roadways!! I know they have the "squash a litterbug" program or something, but they really need to step up awareness. I've been to many cities and don't seem to notice it being so bad in other areas, maybe I'm wrong.

That's my rant for the day.....

Wow, what a coincidence that you should post this today! I was just walking my dog near Rea Road this morning, thinking the same thing. I've never seen so many empty beer bottles strewn about. It looked like a frat party came through last night, and everyone dropped their empties on the side of the road!

Just to clarify, it's the NCDOT that is responsible for the litter clean-up on the interstates and major roadways. The City has been hammering them for the last few years to get their roadways cleaned up and it's finally worked. Right now they have inmates doing an initial clean-up and the responsibility will then be turned over to a contractor, with assistance from the inmates.

Yep. I was not sure of the specifics but I know it is being addressed. Thanks for the clarification.

The better question to ask is, WHO is destroying our beautiful city this way in the first place? I guess with growth comes trash, but honestly it is insulting the way some folks are treating the city I love

The answer to that is simple. About a week and a half ago I was down in Huntersville and I went over to the bagal shop by the Target. As I'm pulling out I got caught at the light at Statesville Road in the turn lane. As I looked over to the right I see this young lady eating a bananna. She takes the peel and just drops it out the window. I just looked at her and shook my head. She never even responded and she just pulled off. Well her plates said NORTH CAROLINA so there is you answer to WHO is doing it.

Is that some welcoming southern charm? Sorry, but i too have seen a whole lot of trash along 485, from Matthews to rt 77. I'd say 99.9% of it is from the natives.
