Default Late registration for out-of-state vehicle

I move one of my cars to NC in September, and the other in November 2008. Both of these have non-NC number plates. I received my NC direvers license last week and planning to apply for NC plates for my cars. I see in the car registration application there is a field called "Date first operated in NC". Does it mean that DMV will fine me because I have the cars in NC without NC plates last few months? Do I need to pay back 2008 taxes for these cars?

Theoretically you could be fined, I think you have like a month upon moving here to register your vehicles.

I had the opposite situation; since my NJ license was still good I lived here for over 2 years before I changed my license, and that was only because my insurance threatened to cancel me. Call me too lazy to study up and take the written test. But I registered my vehicles immediately since the NJ registration expires each year.

I didn't register the car for awhile after moving, I didn't have to pay any extra fines or taxes. I think I had said I am in college here though (which is true), so maybe they assumed that I hadn't "officially" moved here yet?

Dude just lie LOL. If you just got your NC drivers license last week how will the DMV know how long you been in NC?

I think we learned in another thread that the property taxes you pay on your car are good for one year from the date you pay them, so if you pay in December 2008 you will get your next bill in December 2009. My guess is, if you tell DMV you have had the car in NC since June 2008 you will pay your current tax bill and then get another one in June 2009. I doubt they will fine you.

I registered one of my cars, the other still has MO plates. When I registered, they asked how long I've been here. I told him "not too long, a couple of months perhaps". He said "Ok, as long as it hasn't been over a year. If it's over a year then we have to fill out some extra paperwork". That was it. No proof. Nothing extra. Just asked and answered.

So, be vague and say it has been a couple of months.
