Well with 25 years nursing experience I found it easy enough to get a job,but only after running the gauntlet of the lengthy foreign nurse screening process (about 1 year and $800) and sitting the US RN exam (another $300).We then paid our immigration attorney ($1000) and then visa retrogression came into force in 2007 and Green cards are now backlogged by 3-4 years. So the simple fact is that I cannot work.Full stop.My husband,on the other hand, got his MSc last August, applied for a job in September, was offered it in late Jan and started work with his non-immigrant visa in April!

Charlotte has had the reputation of being somewhat of a utopia in the past and people just came here without jobs, expecting to get a good job in days. This may have been the case previously but not anymore. Hence, the OP was being a bit sarcastic.
Situations such as what you have described (was that here in America or in England?) rarely happen. If it is here, a review of your legal description found on your deed would put that situation at rest. You might have to get an survey to support your claim and then a real estate attorney to complete it.

Ah yes, we had already done all that and sent to all 3 neighbors. We think (???) that they have eventually accepted that the land is deeded to us and isn't easement access, plus of course my husband is living there now

Most people here are welcoming to newcomers. Please do not let that incident colour your opinion.

We have found people very welcoming and it is lovely when people stop us and ask us if we are English. They tell us they love our accent, but can't believe it when we say we love theirs too
|
BTW, there is what used to be a large English population in S. Charlotte near to the Ballentyne area. Don't know they are still there, but, I do know that there is a British school there. (maybe you could teach?) We also have a proper pub, Big Ben, down near to the main Presbyterian hospital. World Market has the best buys on Twinings and PG Tips. Welcome!!

Thanks for the welcome-it is most appreciated. I do not think we will be looking for that English community. There are things we will miss about England (maybe!) but on the whole it is not the place it used to be and we are pleased to bringing ourselves and our son to live in the US.We can't wait to start exploring and taking road trips for our vacations! Not sure i've got the hang of these quote things, but you get the idea anyway!

Of course we would bring wine!
When we eventually get out there within the next month or so "our cups runneth over" (another old saying, I think!)

What part of England are you from? I adore England, my son went to Uni there at Keele in Staffs. He got me started going there and I love to go to London (especially). Been around the country a bit, visited a few castles...and even visited St. Mary's Hospital in London when I broke my arm! Great service! This is one American that would love to move to England!! ha, ha
