i live in wilmington towards carolina beach and do not smell or see any smoke.
yesterday the winds were unbelivable strong , fierce. today is much calmer.
I know this is a newbie question, but do they have the water dropping helicopters out here? Just used to them in So Cal. Unfortunatly I have seen them up close too many times. Wishing everyone the best.
I saw in one of the stories that there is a helicopter with a bucket - I think this belongs to the SC National Guard.
Ani - I don't recall there being major wildfires in this area before (at least not like on the West coast). This seems to be out of the ordinary to me. What do you think?

That would be it!
Unfortunatly the last big fire in So Cal was the former city I lived in, Yorba Linda. I was calling friends like no tomorrow and thank goodness everyone was OK. When the winds pick up it's all over.

Seems like there was a big fire in the 70s.
Okay - I just looked that up and in 1976, there was a huge fire near Myrtle. I remembered this b/c for years, we would see charred trees still visible in the area.
it's not that uncommon. I lived there for 7 years and we had 3 or 4 major wildfires in that time. Most of them were from people burning on their properties when they shouldn't have. There's a lot of remote land in Horry county, and they don't do controlled burns to prevent wildfires. There's a lot of brush and pine straw in the forests that just loves to burn.
Ani, from what I heard from friends the fire in the North Myrtle Beach area was contained, but the overall fire was still raging. There are a lot of different stories out there though...

I so hope they get things in control b/f dark. I surely hope the firefighters will be safe . . . and no more homes/businesses are burned down.
If anyone gets a good link to what they are assessing as far as containment and damage, I sure would appreciate it. I have friends in the area.

I have friends and family in Surfside, Myrtle, Conway, and North Myrtle, so if I hear anything more than what can be read online I'll pass it along.
