Default Charlotte Observer reports cases of swine flu

The Observer reported that there were cases of the swine flu in NC, but declined to say how many or where any of the cases are located. Does anyone have any additional information?

Remember that the flu that is being reported in US is much milder (for whatever reason). None of the first 20 were hospitalized, 1 WENT to the hospital for primary care, but was discharged. No deaths on this side of the boarder, and at least from the Dept of health, it is very mild.

From the emergency room, we're told to check a flu test (only about 70% sensitive), send it to the dept of health (several days), and then send you home with voluntary isolation at home for 7 days....so the long/short of it is, if you feel bad, but not "deathly", stay home, drink lots of fluids and take it easy (unless you have multiple medical problems that are severe).

So I'm kind of justified in all of the I've been doing at the news these past couple of days?

Yes, the is correct. Currently the news has nothing to report, so they make up their own version of what is "news". By all means, if you have multiple medical problems, are elderly, young (infants), immunocomprimised, then the concern is real...but not for most of us everyday healthy people.

Suspected cases of swine flu in N.C. | CharlotteObserver.com

I actually posted this in a different thread earlier, but thought it was pertinent here as well. At this time there are no documented cases of swine flu in NC. New York City has the highest number of cases with around 20. The other 24 cases are spread through Southern California, TX, Kansas, etc.

My mother works with the Health Department and they were issued this memo via email as a safety guideline:

Swine Influenz (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses that causes regular outbreaks in pigs. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. Swine flu viruses have been reported to spread from person to person, but in the past, this transmission was limited and not sustained beyond three people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States government and the World Health Organization are working to assure early detection and warning and to respond as rapidly as possible to the Swine Flu Threat in order to lessen its potential health and socioeconomic impact. Rowan County is working with the NC Department of Health. At this time, there is no Swine Flu in Rowan County or in the State of North Carolina. If it does occur in the State, a plan of action has already been determined to help mitigate the impact of the Flu on North Carolinians and residents.

The states with confirmed cases are New York (8), Ohio (1), Kansas (2), Texas (2) + 1 suspected, and California (7). As of yesterday afternoon anyway. All patients have recovered.

I seriously have a ton more important/critical things to worry about right now (selling the house, finding new childcare after I move (thank you current au pair for bailing on us), buying a house).......

The media is bored and looking for stories in the US.

The media is bored and looking for stories in the US.

It reeked of being mostly a non-story with some sort of a fabricated panic feel to it.

It makes for great theater.
