i've been reading these posts for a while now and have not posted but have come to the fork in the road . We are thinking of relocating to NC and our jobs are such that we could be in either the charolette or Raleigh proximity. So which do we choose. . .based on posts union county schools are not as deseriable as concord but we are not used to living in such a large city (coming from a town of less then 10,000). Then there is wake county with wake forest and holly springs which we like very much and like the schools (from what we've read). So what is the deciding factor for all you transplants - what made you decide to be where you are versus some other part of the state? Any suggestions, advice, past experience you care to share would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks much!

Okay, I think you got a litte mixed up? Union county schools are very desirable. Schools in Cabarrus County (Concord) are generally regarded as good also. Concord is hardly a large city, but I guess coming from a town on 10,000 it might feel big. If you want to live further out from a city AND get good schools I would say southwestern Union county is your best bet in the Charlotte area. In the Raleigh area, if you don't mind dealing with busing, look in Cary, Apex or Fuquay Varina. Best of luck!

Both are very good areas and have great economies and sunny, 4-season climates. Charlotte's is banking/financial/insurance, Raleigh's hi-tech, R&D,education. Raleigh's closer to the beaches. The school systems in the area are very good.

Charlotte has more to do recreationally. Charlotte's more centrally located between the beaches and mts. The Charlotte area does have some good school systems (Cabarrus, Union, Mooresville, Ft. Mill, Clover). Charlotte's housing overall is a little more affordable. Really can't go wrong with either area.

It's all relative, I guess. When I first arrived in Charlotte in 1981 to go to UNCC, the population of Concord was only a little over 20,000. Now it's pushing 70,000. And the joke at UNCC was that the school should more appropriately be called UNC-Harrisburg because it was closer to the Harrisburg border than the Charlotte city limits. These days UNCC is very much inside the city limits.
